I remember this. MJ's previous single off HIStory had peaked at number 5 but I don't know what caused that, possibly high radio airplay its first week though it dropped off as quick as it entered. And it paved the way for the mess that's on Billboard right now.

Wacko does not have a present or future.
Sony pulled every trick in the book to get "You Are Not Alone" to go number one on the American pop charts back in 1995. It was cheating but nevertheless, the album was a big sales disappointment for Sony because of Wacko's anti-jewish song, "They Don't Care About Us" and the release had no follow up single played on radio. "Earth Song" was only a hit in Europe. It was obvious that the clown was history when he released the one of the biggest duds of all time with "Blood On The Dance Floor" a couple years later in 1997. The album did not even peak in the top twenty and contained zero hits. The clown was finished and a has been. Being a dead pedophile that is being taken advantage of by the greedy Jacksons to soak as much money from him as possible does not change his disgraceful legacy as a serial child molesting monster. Wade Robson will get any profits that the estate might gain. The IRS will get the rest.

IIRC, it was only number-one for a week. Scream was also on the top five for a week and then dropped.
Most of the songs on the album were actually not radio friendly at all in the states hence why They Don't Care About Us (which was accused of promoting anti semitism) and Stranger in Moscow (which was released in the U.S. in late 1997 of all years) didn't do so well here.
They played the Earth Song video on BET a lot. I remember that was actually the only channel that played it here. I did like the cover Patti LaBelle did of it like years later but I didn't like the original. Of all the "new" songs on HIStory, "Stranger in Moscow" stood out like a sore thumb even if I didn't get it (I know it's about loneliness but judging on his history, I can't feel sympathy). That song was literally the best post-Quincy song he did imho. After that, he never got any better.
I read Tame Impala did a cover of it...

In my opinion, the clown never improved or progressed beyond "Thriller"
Bits and pieces after that.
Prince was superior in every way because he played instruments live/studio, composed his own music and acted in his own blockbuster film, "Purple Rain"
In 1995, the clown was forced to cheat to score his last number one song.
Nineteen years ago is a long, long time.
