Probe into Irish Catholic reform schools finds thousands were b...

Full story: Newsday 61
A fiercely debated, long-delayed investigation into Ireland's Roman Catholic-run institutions says priests and nuns terrorized thousands of boys and girls in workhouse-style schools for decades - and government inspectors failed to stop the chronic beatings, rapes and humiliation. Full Story

Gee, I wonder what insiginifcant religious minority is going to blow this out of proportion in an attempt to weaken those of the catholic faith?

We catholics need to help the hurt and clean up our own messes outside of the media.

There's gotta be some lumpy carpets in this world with all the filthy secrets man has swept under them all these years. It's tough enough to put your trust in strangers and then to be terrorized and emasculated by them to boot? Horrific and pretty dam$#ed sinful.

none of them will get in trouble - they never do... if your a catholic priest you can hurt whomever you want... god says its okay - and so do the people in charge... nasty - and they wonder why people think religion is a joke...

My mother attended these same schools during the 40's and 50's and yes she got the tar kicked out of her.

For her troubles she got a solid education and a decent respect for the consequences of her actions.

Seems to me American schools could learn a lesson or two here.

wow me mum, you are an idiot. Something to learn from a system that beat, humiliated and raped their students? Would you say the same thing if you knew your mother was repeatedly raped by her teachers?

I got a solid education at a LI public school without any of that.

You can comment on the Catholic Church, but you can't comment on obama, Jews, or Muslims. Weird huh?

You guys seem more worried about the Catholic Church being dumped on then what happened to these children.

Rape and beatings do not teach anything but the horror lives with these children for the rest of their lives.

If any other religion does the same, they should be criticized not matter what.

What cuts is that the church is more worried about a fetus in the womb then children alive right now!

Wait for all the Catholic liars and deniers... they'll soon post their nonsense.

They'll blame Newsday.... they'll blame the study... they'll blame those who "always" victimize their idiotic, criminal, perjurious, self-aggrandizing multi-national crime organization... they'll squeal that no one can overcome their moral superiority and singular entitlement to the role as the "one true church", etc. etc.

If it were only ridiculous, I'd stay out of it. People are entitled to be as delusional and ignorant as they choose to be. However, this consortium of evil and merchant of blatant "Big Lie" advertising is harboring dangerous felons... always has.

Bernie Madoff should burn in hell for the suffering he has caused, but this so-called Church has ripped off FAR more money and destroyed and abused far more and uncountable numbers of victims-- all while proclaiming their moral supremacy. At least Madoff didn't do that.

too lame... guess you can't say "burn in h*ll" ...

FYI... forums not tied to Newsday don't censor plain, decent and perfectly legitimate comments like that.

Parochial schools in the U.S. allowed beatings, and verbal humiliation. In defense of the nuns I had who did that they taught enormous class sizes often 80 to 100 kids, and they had them from 9 AM till 3 PM with only a lunch break. Many of the nuns joined the religious orders to help others but ended up being assigned teacher duty to save the parish from having to hire a paid school teacher. They often had menial tasks like cleaning and ironing after school and still had to prepare for the class, mark and make up tests and quiz's, and attend daily Mass. The pastors were often advanced based on how rich the parish was, and how much money was sent up to the diocese.

Things improved after the Vatican Council when the Latin Mass was replaced, and the priest had to face his parishoners during mass.

Most parents went along or even agreed with the harsh discipline and constant criticism of their kids at school. If you didn't do homework, they beat it into you. Most of us got a good elementary education from the experience. When I was in basic training the Drill Sgt. was no different than the Nuns, I fit into the U.S. Army like I'd been born there. Regimentation was something those Nuns could have taught the Army a thing or two about.

Just remember the Catholic Church has very little to do with the teachings of Jesus Christ. The Roman Catholic Church is a bastardization of Christianity. The Romans mixed their pagan religion with the Christian teachings and perverted the word of God. Judaism is closer than Catholicism to true Christianity. Leave the Catholic church and pick up a Bible and read, that is the path to God.

WOW... not that I'm surprised-- you're the prototypical apologist I predicted would soon show up!!

Yeah-- let's beat the kids...let's rape those in powerless positions... and then let's advocate more violence!!

You probably think rape victims ask for it.

I know you. You are SICK and you will excuse and deny EVERYTHING your pathetic church does.

Go to h*ll. You belong there with all the other felons and enablers!! You can't take the truth and you have always shown that you care NOTHING about the church's criminal behavior.... let them rape, let them beat, let them abuse--- you are intentionally BLIND and IGNORANT... or WORSE.

Is this behavior you savored? That's obviously a rhetorical question--- you say we should promote this criminal activity. Like the worst of the worst, you are perversely proud of this abuse and seek to ENCOURAGE the most despicable and indefensible behavior-- even when it's inflicted on those with NO choice... not miltary volunteers whom you apparently believe should be routinely beaten and raped. These people were defenseless!!

This deplorable conduct is readily condemned by people with even minimal comprehension of constructive human interaction who deplore blatant cruelty and abuse. I believe that only a very distorted and dangerous mind could stand for the positions you espouse.
