Yea. Not only have I saw it on web forums, but a lot of the kids around here [that call themselves emo] say that too. The dumbest thing ever is when these little brats say that, and [jokingly] you ask them if they would buy their cds because they "are emo afterall". You get a no. Its like wtf? And its just even sadder to me that a kid said that about Emilie Autumn! When will the emo culture stop stealing from other cultures? I mean they have no literature to read, and no art [unless some ankle biter not knowing wtf hes talking about says that "Pablo Piccasso is emo".]
This is what gets to me, next thing I guess that could be said is that the sky is purple and say Pantera or Anthrax is "poppy". ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!
But I hope you got my point, its in there somewhere.
Ok...I AM tired. What I meant by the "no literature" remark is that there is really not any kind of writing style that goes hand in hand with their culture. Whereas the Goth culture does. There are tons of writers throughout the ages with a darker mindframe that expressed that through their writing. All I've seen those kids around here reading are those "how to be emo" manuals. lol. Again, same with the art. I'm not saying that they can't be art fans, but their culture seems to have just very shallow roots. Theres so many artists out there with fantastic work, if they like it, ok. And I think I went totally off base on this, but like I said, its 1 in the morn here and I've had a long day. Hopefully in this mess, a point is made.

Actually, I can believe it. I showed some kid my Emilie Autumn 'Opheliac' CD and he called her emo. I was like x.x

Emo DOES need to stop stealing from other cultures. I get so annoyed when people call me 'emo', but I usually don't feel like explaining the difference between emo and Goth to them. And Emilie doesn't even LOOK like a typical emo (or a stereotypical Goth, for that matter)! Emo kids and those that only know of emo think that anything "dark" or "scary" is emo.

And that someone said that Pablo Picasso is emo makes me LOL.

Right? And I said that her style was more "Gothic Lolita", and he looked at me blankly.

It really gets to me when people say that to me too. I don't usually bother explaining at all, people that say things like that are stupid and set in their ways. Nothing will change their minds, explaining it will only reinforce their false theories and stuff. The thing that makes me lmfao at these kids who say this about Emilie Autumn [noone around here knows who she is] or The Cruxshadows is when you ask them "well you said you're an emo, would you listen to them because they're obviously "emo" to you?" And their response "No. Thats freak music." As if calling them emo didn't get me mad enough, calling their music 'freak music' is over the line!
And I didn't mean to say Picasso is emo, I was really tired when I typed that. I was using him as an example......and I was tired.

No... I thought you meant tat you heard someone else call Picasso "emo".
"Freak music"? I'm guessing that they listen to Katy Perry and My Chemical Romance, then?

Yea. For the Picasso thing, man...what was going through my head? I can't remember! I haven't been able to see all the art he created, but I do like his work. lol. Ehh....
How they managed to call those bands "freaks" or "freak music" is beyond me. They're the ones who listen to a band where its members wear yellow makeup [YELLOW] around their eyes. I'm not trying to go off on a rant here, but wtf? Yellow looks horrible on almost everyone. Are they desperately trying to look like they're on their deathbed? But yea, thats pretty much the stuff they listen to. But most of em just seem really super confused. I'd like to show them what they're really following, but they won't believe me. I find it funny that these kids ask for acceptance, and people to "understand them", but if someone does....oh God forbid! lol.

ok first of all this artical is amazingly stupid because the reason why kids are emo is because of problems at home and they cant stand it so they cut them selfs and keep to there selfs cause they feel that they cant tell anybody!!! seconed yes it could just be a phase but most the time it's there "culture". btw (fyi) a culture is a nationality's beliefe's and traditions. btw im emo so i should know!

Major run-on sentence. Use commas next time. It spares my brain the energy it takes to make sense of this. Problems at home? What their mommy got them a green ipod when they wanted blue? Yeah, real problems at home all right. I won't complain about my life, its pretty damned sweet right now. The thing is if you really did have "problems at home" you would freaking work through them instead of harming yourself and complaining about it. Thats what us grown us grown up people do when we have problems.

That didn't even make sense about the nationality thing. But basically what I got from that is that you said emos are part of a nationality. I'm not saying that there aren't emos out there of different nationalities as with goths and punks alike, but you made it sound as if emo is a separate nationality all on its own. Really? What country does your ancestry hail from? Emoland? But you did say before that that it "could just be a phase". But if its your "nationalities beliefs" as you put it, how "could it just be a phase"?

There's a small degree of truth in that for a lot of people it's just a phase. But the people going through the phase are usually the suicidal ones, because they just want to fit in with the "unique kids" and they think being suicidal makes them unique.
But yeah; Parents DO need to understand emo culture. Something these people, whoever wrote that article, obviously do not.

For the most part it is. If you think about it, things like the Punk and the Goth subcultures started in the late 70s early 80s and emo came not too long after that. Those people that identified themselves with emo back then really don't exist as "emos" anymore. For most it lasts until about the time they hit 25 [for some its sooner from what I've learned] and they move on to identify themselves with the Goth culture or they just leave all alternative cultures altogether.

[Did that make any sense? I hope it did, it doesn't make sense to me.]
