ABC 4 News is sounding the alarm about a teen phenomenon sweeping the nation. Its something we found most teens know about, but few parents had any clue of. Its called "emo" culture.

"Emo" is an abbreviation for emotional. Part punk, part goth, emo kids celebrate sadness and pain. Psychologist Judith Zimmerman tells ABC 4 News, Part of the guiding philosophy of emo kids is pain. That's the sub-current.

Our news team began their study of emo culture on the internet, where we quickly found hundreds of sites dedicated to teaching kids what emo is and how to be it. One site instructs, dye your hair black. Style it in the gunshot wound and never be happy.

Happiness is a sin to emo culture. In a state where the number two cause of teen death is suicide, experts say parents need to know emo culture and understand it.

Not every child who looks emo may be in to cutting themselves, dark poetry or talk of suicide, says psychologist Judith Zimmerman. Some of these kids may just be in a phase. Its important to tell the difference between a fashion statement and a commitment to a lifestyle. Parents need to understand the deeper meanings of why their child might be drawn to emo culture.

WHAT THE F*CK IS THIS??????!!!!

Not a thing. The problem is that each successive generation seems to think that the newest generation's methods of expressing it are scary and undermine the fabric of civilization. You'd think they would remember when their parents made the same claims about youth culture.

Oh, please someone shoot me if I get like that when I'm older....

I saw plenty of those back in the late 1980s. Look up information on groups like N.W.A.(specifically their song "F**k Tha Police"), the 2Live Crew, or read up on a song put out by Ice-T's group Body Count called "Cop Killer", and you will see quite a bit of the same overreaction and alarmist rhetoric.

Life is change, lala. People who are surprised by change are fooling themselves into thinking that they can control what life throws at you. Also, I find it repulsive when people use fear as an excuse to subjugate others.

I don't blame people for finding it hard to adjust to the times, nor can I blame them for being afraid. The problems come when they use that fear to justify illogical behavior, calling themselves "protecting others" or "defending tradition". I suppose the people responsible for that news report finally got tired of hounding kids with trench coats and needed a new boogyman with which to scare up some ratings.

What bullsh!t.

I watched tha tvideo on youtube and i was thouroughly disgusted! What's wrong with my sadomasochistic ways? So what if i create art with my sadness and pain? so what if i use my body as a canvas? Is there anything wrong with me because of that? the body is a beautiful thing in the first place, i feel by doing this i'm only making it greater.

i didnt mean that i was upset by change, i just meant like for the elderly it would be difficult if they were used to something their whole lives and then someone else came in and disrupted their routine lol

its what you feel that counts
everyone has their own opinion, you just choose to express it this way
after all it is your body

It's news stations and people that think the exact opposite that ruin lives and force us into suicide.
