I just did a search for this band in google cause my friends told me that within temptation sounds similar to them, and id say they are not emo at all. Then again some ppl may think within temptation is emo, but I like em.

It is not gothic rock. Pop-Rock/Emo at its best. I hate how people freakin' say bands like this are goth rock. You want the true gothic rock bands, look to Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, and similar sounding bands. Listen to them, and compare them to Evanescence. I can't stand Evanescence, so I can't really say much more here.

Evanescence is not Emo or Goth Rock, and anyone who knows anythng about the Emo or Goth culture knows that. Emo music is like Panic! At the Disco, MUSE, AFI, and My Chemical Romance, where Goth finds itself with bands like She Wants Revenge, Godhead, Inkubus Sukkubus, Lacuna Coiul, and Cell Dweller. Besides that, what makes 'Goth Music' Goth and 'Emo Music' emo is not necessarily in the heavyness of the bands, it has alot to do with lyrical content, tempo changes, and originality.

I'm trying to keep this as un-biast as possible because I have everything and anything Emo, so I'll put it the best way I can, Emo has a pop-like sound where goth generally has a deeper more industrial feel to it.

True. But still, given what was said it doesn't make Evanescence a "goth" or whatever band. Their music lacks originality. I'm trying remain unbiased here, but I can't. Alot of their lyrics do sound very emo. It doesn't matter if the lyrics are emo, and the music isn't, it still makes them emo in some way or another.[I feel kind of contradictory today.]And I did it, I said my piece.

I'm just sick of people calling them "Gothic". I'm just so sick of this watered down shit..........

To the person who stated that they were gothic above my first post, do tell. What could possibly make them "Gothic"? Surely it isn't their lyrics, or their following. And before I step on anymore toes [if any], I'd just like to say "Thanks".

Do you know what the true definition og "emo" music is? Not what these posers that mimic one another and try to call themselves "goth subculture" - but true emo music?(dont get me started on emos are not goths)

Emo music is a split from punk that started in the mid to late 80s - the music is loud, hard and has soft whispering lyrics. NOTHING like Evanescense.

At best they are Dark rock. Hardly goth. Nothing like Anders Manga or The Cruxshadows or VNV Nation - Please.

And certainly nothing near Emo...

I could care less for emo music. The original or otherwise. All I do know is that its inspiration was drawn from goth and punk bands and the movement was called "Emotive Hardcore". The original movement. The newer "Emo" movement is different. By previous standards, Evanescense would be considered a darker kind of rock music, but as far as todays shallow standards go, they're emo.

Sorry Dreadful but a band doesn't qualify as Emo just becuase you don't like them. Evanescence is much much closer to Goth Rock than Emo. While they don't really fall into either genre, they are much further away from Emo on the Music Genre line.

Okay - let me be more blunt - and sadly this makes people upest. I really thought i agreed with you on everything everything Dreadfully - original Emo - or lets call it by its true name "Emotive Hardcore" music did not come from gothic roots. It was solely from Punk. At no time Did Emotive Hardcore ever merge with Punk or Goth - EH was its own institution of what people call "screamo" music and NOT a fashion statement. Read the history books of the genre by Andy Randin or the articles published by John DeRogatis. But true listeners of Emotive hardcore are gone - REAL EMOS ARE DEAD. Some moron on MTV used the word emotive incorrectly as emotional and resurrected a dead music style as a fashion style. The music world lost screamo for pop. And the mall gained a new gang of fashionistas. These are not true emos in the musical sense of the word. And neither the goth or punk culture wants anything to do with them because they stand for just another fashion trend that we stand against.

Its not because I despise them, their lyrics just sound very emo to me. From what I've heard a few of the songs off their new cd or older one are about suicide. I don't know if anyone else agrees with me, but suicide is very closely related to emo as an emo subject, by the newer standards.

Honestly I simply [and I say this with no bias towards Evanescense at all] What qualities do they have as a Goth Rock band? What makes them more Goth Rock than Emo?

Their lyrics make you feel far more depressed than they cause you to think, to question things. I am not at all biased when I write this, at all. These are just some of the things I felt when I read their lyrics the other day.

As far as things go, if I like em I like em. If I don't I don't. I don't like evanescense. Frankly to me, they seem really depressing, or emo......whatever. By what fu.cked up standards there are nowadays. Thats my opinion. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. You can't change the fact everyone has an opinion. You can help change it and shape it, but they'll still have an opinion. Did I mention I'm quite stubborn? But I'll still think their music is depressing and prefer not to listen to it. Whatever! Its music! I don't care, I don't give a fu.ck.

Ummm...maybe because the name of this Forum Question was "Is Evanescence an Emo Band?" Just a thought. Hoping you were having one too.

Actually not many of their lyrics are about suicide, but they are about death. Mostly death of someone close. A number of their songs also deal with faith and god, as well as lost relationships and friendships and subjets that almost all bands sing about.

But I do have to agree with _raven_, I think Amy Lee has a phenominal voice combined with some really good guitar and drum rythums.

The Goth bands who started this whole thing were never ever about death. They indeed had an infatuation with it [like all of us do], but their lyrics never emphasized death. Their lyrics were deep, and inquisitive. They were thought provoking and didn't promote one faith or another. Amy Lee is a good singer, but I still do not like Evanescense.

I never said Goth bands sing about death constantly, but Evanescence does cover the topic quite a bit, if you read into their lyrics instead of taking them at face value. And Amy seems to just present her faith in her songs, not promote or try to persuade.

I did say before I judged them at face value, but honestly I don't. I remember when all my friends started getting into their music, I had one listen and I was finished with them. She has an amazing voice, but their music was too metalish for me. I'm not saying a band can't be Goth and be Metal at the same time, but very few pull the latter off well. Some of their songs have gothic metaphors to them, but it still isn't Gothic. Or Goth Rock for that matter. But like I said previous to this, its all a matter of opinion. If they're Goth Rock to you, then they're Goth Rock in your opinion. They aren't in mine. I have an opinion. You have one too. Let it rest.
