Advocating that artists "work cheap" or for free sets a bad example and is not "so supportive of everyone else."

I look forward to increased transparancy from the CULtural Council. The article states that the CC supports Open Studios but the reality is thatOpen Studios earns money for the CC. The fees that artists pay to be in Open Studios earn a profit for the CC. The CC has a more than million dollor budget and just where does that million dollors go other than salaries to people like Michelle Willaiams and other CC staff. Look forward to the transparancy.$60,000 is a very small piece of change to go to the Spectra. program. Im sure Michelle is a very sweet person and a fabulous entertainer and will be part of a FUN event for those among us who can afford $125 for dinner and a show

Orson Welles?! Come on Wallace, that's over the top even for you. Just what I'm sure the Cultural Council needs -- another ego-driven performance artist.

Did we really need to look elsewhere to find a lead for the Cultural Council? I would have voted for someone who knows SC inside and out.

Well... looking forward to seeing what she will do.

OMG Two Hats! for any nonprofit ED that might be a coffee break. I agree with the folks who have been wanting more transparency from the Cultural Council and yes,$60,000 might pay for two part time art instructors, so what's the big deal re: all this busy-ness and "grant making"?

And, as we all know, they keep most people busy with the insane reporting system they have for the $1,400 grant! Many think not even worth it.

She is perky though, and no doubt talented, so sure, attend the fundraiser.

truly. this is ridiculous. i thought so when i didn't apply. i knew they would skip over me for irrational reasons, and i could have connected this community in ways they had never dreamed of artistically. a local artist should obviously run a local arts organization. it's a bear shiTTing in the woods kind of thing. it's not about what she will do, it's about what so many of us could have done who don't fit in the languishing mold. sometimes there is too much talent to fit into inbred non-profits for their own good at the expense of their constituents. they do feed their own salaries. and it's time for a name change. let "council" go. it doesn't reflect what community art is. stop saying it's about what a few think art should be and what should be seen by a few. how about SCCA? Santa Cruz Cultural Arts?

Hurray for Spectra artists. Thye have brought art to our schools for years and without them many kids would not have the opportunities to be creative that these artists provide.

Culture, in Santa Cruz? What a waste of time and money.
