The three"bobbleheads" were infinitely more qualified than Silver's best-buddy DiNapoli. Spitzer was elected because he wants to stop this kind of crap from happening. As for Bloomberg you must put away your smoke, he wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in Hell running against Spitzer. Bloomberg is a custodian presiding over a flourishing NYC that Rudy created for him. All he needs to do to look good is not screw it up. Jay D wrote: DiNapoli may or may not be qualified but I'm sure glad Spitzer didn't get one of his three bobblehead's appointed. He's just another power hungry politican throwing a tantrum because another power hungry politician, Silver, isn't prostrating himsef before the self annointed emperor. He better hope that Bloomberg isn't interested in Albany when he terms out, Elliot wouldn't stand a chance.

Like most State jobs it is not the person in charge, but the workers below them that get the job done. If Thomas DiNapoli can run the Comptrollers Office then he is doing what is expected. Look at Governor Spitzer's people and you see millions of dollars in salary - he hired "qualified people" who will handle the day to day work that he gets credit for.

Governor Spitzer is quickly finding out that there is a difference between prosecuting and governing. I hope he learns the difference soon, or little by little he will waste away the high percentage of support he has from the people of NY. I remember a president who enjoyed unheard of popularity after 9/11, and look at how popular and effective he is today!

I think Spitzer will find out just how qualified DiNapoli is when he does the first investigation of one of Spitzer's agencies.

1) The actual comptroller does not really need to be an accountant, although that REALLY helps.
2) The comptroller needs to be able to administer and oversee the logistics of the audits
Do I think it was wrong for the handshake deal to be disregarded? Yes, it sets a terrible precedent for their future relations.

I did not take long for the real Spitzer to shrug off his campaign skin. He is an egomaniac, backed by family money, and if he thinks he represents all NYers he is absolutely wrong. He is just another trust fund liberal with a big mouth. Look at all of his Wall Street "prosecutions" -- all accusations were on page one, but when the charges were dropped or found out to be totally bogus, well, the news was on page 99. He is a jerk, pure and simple.

Mr. DiNapoli, while an honorable person from what I could see, is clearly not qualified for this job. The controller should be an accountant. Mr. DiNapoli is not. The legislative should have nominated Howard Weitzman, a CPA who understands the job and was recomended by the commission.

I'm glad to see that this forum is generally split on this issue. It means that all of Spitzer's money and grandstanding has not clouded everyone's judgment. The comptroller’s position is one of oversight of the governor's spending. Does anyone really believe the Governor should be allowed to appoint this person? Or that he should be able to appoint the committee that appoints the comptroller (as if that is any different)? We got an honest and just comptroller, be happy.

Exactly, the comtroller monitors the executive branches spending of money. Why would the Governor appoint him.

Jim Sallie wrote: No, He is not a CPA. Since he is the controller now he should start taking courses at a college to become one. Tom Suozzi was more gualified them him. I believe Mr. Suozzi is an accountant and an attorney. Suozzi hasn't been a licensed CPA since the late 1980's. You have to keep current in a profession in order to use that as a credential. Di Napoli's experience in the Assembly, which deals with spending bills, makes him more qualified than Suozzi to be Comptroller.
