Was "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" A Good Military Policy?

Just don't know how I feel on this altogether
If one is a proud American and wants to fight for our country should we say NO?
not to knock women but they are part of military combat these days. is there a real difference where gender is concerned serving in military?
