No, it isn't Led Zep without Plant. I bet this is a publicity stunt to a.) get the public's appetite whetted, and b.) a means to pressure Robert back into the fold.

I saw 'em twice in '77, but by now I'm tired of hearing 'em over & over (same with the Beatles). That being said, I'm still very interested in seeing how this all plays out.

Is isn't LedZeppelin without him, which proves they are only doing it for the money and the glory of what once was - they can not do it with out him.

That would be like VanHalen without Eddie, or SpinalTap without Nigel.

You need to here The Black Crows w/Page do Zep tunes live at the Greek Theater. On some songs, like 'In my time of dying', they're better than the original! Yeah, Robinson couldn't hold some of Plant's notes like in 'Whole Lotta Love' but Plant can't reach and hold these notes either. Jimmy's not the same player he was, but with the Crows lead player helping out it sounded great! So, in the end, Plant isn't even Plant anymore - and the reason he won't tour like he is.

The posts on this page make me saddened... to see so much ignorance in the general fan base of Led Zeppelin; leave the heavy work to the big boys.

Jimmy and JPJ are 70-80% of what remains of Led Zeppelin; it will be very different with another singer, but it will still be very much Led Zeppelin; or did any of you ever listen to the guitar and bass and key of that band.

Led Zeppelin is not some dude with long blonde frizzy hair. Snap out it.

Stick to your hand lotion and pictures of britney spears, and conceal your ignorance rather than trumpeting it... ;)

I gave this matter some thought, because it is always a matter of judgement just how many members you can take from a group before its just a brand supported by musician employees. Now this question about zepp without page is not anywhere near a grey area, but I wanted to kick some criteria around a bit:

1) Quartet with 4 very strong members--lose one, but no more than that. For me, John paul jones would be the easist to replace without losing the zepp feel. They already lost a very distinctive drummer.

2) Has the group had any hits or even released an album under the new personnel? Deep purple did this after machine head and made in japan, but I don't think the new lineup every took off.

3) Did key member die or quit? If they quit, the fact that they are still around makes the new linup seem less legit.

4) Has group ever toured with new lineup? It helps if they do a really good job to sort of earn the name. Most former 70s rock groups I see tour have been ravaged by drugs and aging, and the music ain't all that great.

5) How long since the group has been heard from? For zepp, been a long time... 30 years?

6) Did group seem to lose it before the breakup? I sure thought in through the out door was a pale immitation of a very strong set of albums--and this was said to be very much a john paul jones album due to page's heroin addiction. Now I think jones is a great musician, but that album left me yawning.

This kind of thread can be fun if we talk about who can and can't leave a group before its a cynical moneymaking exercise. For instance, who could have left the beatles?

PS. Saw zepp twice in the late 70s, and due to intoxication, they didn't do a very good job. Due to intoxication, most fans didn't notice.... ;)

i dont know. i think for cynical money making excercises palnt takes the cake. he cynically exploitted tour rumors for a year to prop up that bs tour. i guess then they shoulda THROWN him out. nah. we're all obsessed with money cause we dont have any. zeppelins not obsessed with money. after 30 years all the sudden they want the
money? yeah sure. no they're doing it becuase they wasn to make soem music and thats fine by me. not that they care, or that its any of my business. or yours. buy the album if you want. if your pissed caused plant didnt come along you SHOULD buy it, hes the one that pussied out.

Exactly right Mr Page. I half suspect that Plant is in cahoots with that fat greedy b@stard promoter Harvey Goldsmith or Goldstein whatever his f. name is who is now questioning the use of the Led Zep name if Plant's not there. It's the music that counts not the money. I just hope that fat b@stard doesn't come anywhere near to being a hanger on again.

My time on Topix is limited and I'll be concentrating on the blog that appears in the UK. That is the only one that gets on the national front page, and obviously being the home country of the Zep, I'm hoping it will in it's own way reach ears that count.

Like Mr. Page said many years ago, the name means nothing. Its the music that counts.
I got plenty of pleasure from the Page/Plant tours a decade ago now. It wasnt Zeppelin but it was the Zeppelin music, faithfully reproduced.
Could the Zep play without Page, unthinkable of course but another singer, despite it being one hell of a tall order, maybe. By all accounts Robert can still wail well enough but if he doesnt want to do it, fair enough but get someone in but not a clone and please no Coverdale in any circumstances. Grohl is probably the best bet. A true fan and it would be a tribute.
Robert just change your mind man, its not too late!
