What Mr. Mayor? Because the taxpayers want to have a vote on an issue that will cost them millions, and potentially millions more, you don't want to foot the bill!? How about the hundreds of thousands of dollars you have thrown at that shelter WITHOUT voter approval! The end result being 50%* of our Police and Fire calls going to coddle vagrants(* as per former city manager Dick Wilson). The people in the City of Santa Cruz demonstrated that they CAN save water. So much so that Kocher's Water Department was telling other city departments to start using MORE water! Check the decline in the Water Depts. revenue during the last water shortage! There ARE other solutions. If you are not studying ALL options then you are not doing the job you were elected to do so! Let the people vote!!!!!!

I guess since the RTC was able to obligate the taxpayers for tens of millions of dollars for a Railway to Nowhere money pit without a vote, Lane felt he and the council could get away with it.
Where is the $100,000,000+ coming from? Why would "green" Santa Cruz support such a high energy (fossil fuel) low yield environmentally unfriendly project?
Is there any available water (wells are far cheaper than desal) on the UCSC campus, or has anyone bothered to look?
