When will the academic community realize that every single facet of our community is taking a hit with this economic tsumani? Those in the academic community, and especially tenure professors like Professor Pudup, are the most immune, and therefore have a pretty stable soap box on which to spout their woe-is-me pabulum. The budget cuts are not a statement of values. They are a statement of facts, and recognition of source of funds -- i.e., state general funds rather than specific federal grant or contract funds. Sorry folks, but our taxes are no longer covering your expenses. It's nothing personal. It's reality. Maybe the good professor could voluneer to take a 10% salary cut to maintain her administrative staff?

Yeah, well, right now the radio is playing Tommy James and the Shondells, "Sweet Cherry Wine." Just thought I'd put the age of Community Studies in historical perspective, more or less.

Too true. Many of the teachers in Santa Cruz County who are CS grads mistake the profession of teaching (which they are untrained for and often not good at) with that of activism, where they, in their well-learned-community studies-self justifying demeanor look at the world through a one-way-hyper rationalized lenz that ignores the consequences their activism has on society and the people they think they are serving.

What Mary Beth doesn't understand is that the local constituency is now 40-years-tired tired of playing lab rat to a bunch of ideological kids from elsewhere, lead by crazed lecturers and professors who's only wealth is measured by the destruction they have brought to our once fine community.

Well, Steve Hartman, I hope those ideological kids can spell better than you can. The past participle of "to lead" is "led" and the possessive pronoun of "who" is "whose" not "who's". Your spelling is as rotten as your argument.

Community studies is an awesome program. Too bad their eliminating it now. Some of my friends graduated from Community Studies. Personally I wanted to graduate Literature but back then I was a shy writer. Now I would kick arse as a Literature major. But I would also kick arse as a Community Studies major too, even as a Social Documentary major in the Anthropology Department. I wouldn't mind following in the footsteps of local hero Bradley Stuart Allen. I swoon for him x O x O x.
