Hey folks,

recently I saw a kind of charts providing you with cover song charts of the most recent hits:

I have to say that I was amazed how good most cover versions are and actually most of them are even better than the original imo.

What I am asking here is, how those cover song perfomers earn money and if they do, are they allowed of simply cover any song they like or do they have to pay a fee or something?

hey you are correct that many cover songs are better then the original versions. You'd be surprised but many times there are tons of songs out there in the world that are cover songs and well if someone has not heard the original they never know it was a cover song. I'm pretty sure that you have to pay a share to cover a song. i know if you play something live there is no fee to cover it, there some copyright law to this all, but it all depends on who owns the copyrights to a song and how and who gets paid. Some artists or songwriters at times may not care if there song was covered and will not ask for a fee, while others may ask for a fee. it all boils down to who and what.
Like for me, music is my life. it shaped and molded who i am as a person. like my name should show I'm into Punk rock, but for me being punk is a life style and the music is just part of the culture, community and life style, but blah blah....... In the world of punkrock cover songs are always done. i can ask a few of my friends if you like how it all works with there record labels and etc when they have done a cover song, recorded it and if that had to pay anything or not. I do know at times you can pay a up front flat fee to the label or artist who owns the rights to a song, and other times can sign off to royalties for album sales.

I'd say most - no.
Though there are a few out there that have improved on the originals. Mostly, if they sound different, it's not so much an improvement as an alternative version.

Nirvana's cover of an old leadbelly song which obviously was old sounding...
