But of course the raid was clearly defined....Are you forgetting the raid on Columbus,N.M.? They went after Villa to "punish " him for the intrusion on US soil. The corrupt Carranza government would do nothing, in fact they harassed and delayed Pershing's Punitive Expedition at every turn. The secondary objective of the foray was to train a core of veterans for the coming US entry into WW1. The mass grave you mention contained not just 19 US soldiers, but 34 Mexican Carranzistas as well.

Villa was not " reined in " by the Mexican government, but was allowed to apply for amnesty, and given several thousand acres and a hacienda near Parral.

My father served on George Patton's staff during WW2. He has told me many stories about Patton holding forth about the Punitive Expedition, in which Patton participated as a young lieutenant on Pershing's staff.

it is documented, altho not clearly where, that Villa was over 800 miles from columbus durning the time of the attack, Pres Wilson knew this for a fact, it was his assined attachment to Villa that reported the facts. He decided to ignore the facts and go with the popular "news" as reported, He had already given his support to allies overseas, and needed a training ground for green US troops, there was never an intention to capture Villa, only an excuse to conduct realistic training before the big war. It is said the the Germans portrayed the attack in NM, trying to enduce the US into a squirmish with Mexico, thus keeping them from the coming war. lots of reading bbetween the lines here, I got most of this from reading accounts from this time in history on the internet.....

Did you forget the entire 10th Cavalry? There was never any intention of sending Black("Negro") Regulars over to fight in WW1. In fact, racism dictated that untrained draftees and volunteers were to be used in "suitable" labor battalion work rather than combat, and the Black troops that did fight had to do so under French command and in French lines. Pershing, who earned his nickname "Blackjack" for commanding Negro troops, would not let them fight as part of the American Expeditionary Force of WW1, his fighting Blacks were turned over to the French, where they won the first medals for heroism awarded to American troops in that war!(Needham & Roberts). Also, let us not forget that Villa was murderously hateful of the Chinese, who had helped Pershing during the punitive expedition, slaughtering any he came across in his raids and once proclaimed he would "Hang every Chino in Chihuahua". The Blacks & Chinese were on the scene also, let's give them their historical due, Please...
