I remember going to Sam's meat market with my dad in the late 50's and 60's. He aways had the biggest smile. Edie was a friend of my mother, Ada. They were great people with warm and compassion in their hearts. The community has lost and icon, but her memories will linger for decades.

I will miss Edith. She was my English teacher from hell at Monterey High and she got stuck with a bunch of dumb jocks. She forced us to read "Les Miserables" and tell us about "Big" Sam the meat man. That was 52 years ago but will never forget her and that class. Later I enjoyed reading letters to the Herald from Sam, Edith and Judy. Sam helped me on some local problems I had when he was Supervisor. I also attended several plays that Sam and Edith were in at the old "flea house" and Wharf theater. I hope the City dedicates a street or bench in her honor.

SAM AND EDIE WERE FRIENDS OF MINE BUT HAVE NOT SPOKEN TO THEM IN OVER 15 YEARS. THEY WERE THE DYNAMIC PAIR OF DOERS. SAM WAS ONE OF MY MENTORS IN THE 1990'S. A FAIR AND UNDERSTANDING MAN. HE ALWAYS KNEW YOU BY YOUR FIRST NAME. BOTH SMILED AT LIFE AND WERE SO POSITIVE AND LOVING. I WILL MISS THEM BOTH.

Edie was such a good friend. She was full of humor; she was thoughtful; she loved a good laugh or a fine story. She was truly a great woman. I will miss her dearly. My deepest sympathy to all her family.
