This new collection of Taylor/Burton classic films is an intriguing look at the dynamics of this controversial couple on screen. The Big Sur setting of The Sandpiper and the story of the unlikely lovers captures the tension of the 60's well--that aspect of the era that looked to California for freedom, escape, love and simplicity. The conflict of conscience experienced by the minister is no longer a novel subject, but the ideas are certainly still relevant: knowing yourself, finding a niche in the social fabric, being at peace with one's soul. Despite the numerous criticisms of The Sandpiper, I found it not only beautiful to look at cinematically, but pertinent in its themes--and that's what a classic is--relevant for any time. Give this film a chance and enjoy!
