WITH a spring in his step, a defiant smile and a fabulous fedora worn at a "jaunty" angle, John Hurt is instantly recognisable as he reprises one of his most famous roles. Three decades after he embraced his inner dandy playing gay raconteur Quentin Crisp in The Naked Civil Servant, he has taken on the role again for a sequel, An Englishman in New York.

I've always thought John Hurt was an undervalued actor.

For most he's probably remembered as the space traveller with the universe's worst case of indigestion in ALIEN.

For me, he will always be the extremely frustrated Roman emperor, Caligula in I, CLAUDIUS.

My favorite Quentin Crisp maxim? "Never try to keep up with the Joneses. Bring the Joneses down to your level."
