It's amazing how much humour writer/director Tate Taylor weaves into The Help without trivializing its essentially serious subject the lives of African-American maids working in white households in 1963 Jackson, Mississippi.

I lived in Jackson in the 1960s. I think most colored people were as happy as people -- white and black are today.

As a humorous aside, when in the first grade Raines Elementary School (now all-black)(off Clinton Blvd on Flag Chapel Road), our teacher told us that a collection was being taken for the colored lunch room workers and housekeepers and asked if we could bring something. I told my mother, and she went into the pantry and came out with two tins of sardines. Handing them to me she said, "Negroes love sardines."

I don't know if they do or don't, but her comment has stuck with me. This incident took place around 1961-62.

God bless all the good people who took care of us in those days.
