Well, NO ONE is perfect and people can and do change. AND you are free to worship anyone else you may admire.
BTW, there are famous people from Lowell that were not as hard scrabble. So your contention is incorrect, not to mention cynical and one that smacks of jealousy.
I know there are a lot more people from lowell who have contributed GREAT THINGS to the country, they are more worthy of note than some junkie, drunken writer, or a drunken junkie pugilist with a similarly dysfunctional family. It's nice to see they made the papers, but the putting them on a pedestal just doesn't seem to cut it with me. But of course, that stuff that realy contibutes to society as a whole doesn't make movies, does it.

I have grown up in Lowell all my life and I remember as a kid not even to have to lock our doors, now we need deadbolts and some kind of protection close by at all times....My brother was murdered in Lowell and it had NOTHING to do at all with drugs or gang, he was at the wrong place (his house) at the wrong damn time, alls he did was answer his door and the person on the other side of the door thought it was his roommate but I can remember back in the day it was not this bad at all, life for example when I was a kid you never heard of a 10-12 year old bringing a gun, knife or weed to school, it was whoever had the most hostess cakes was the bad a$$. I also do give Ward credit for all hes been through and accomplished. Cant wait to see the movie myself :D

Mickey is a soft spoken nice guy. The movie is about him. It's not his fault his brother is a crackhead and his sisters are dysfunctional. That's his mother Alices mess. Don't malign Mickey for it. He didn't raise them. He's lucky he got out with any sanity.

Just saw the movie today and was truly gratified to see Lowell as the underdog done good.

Lowell is, above all else, a city that doesn't stay against the ropes. It bounces back time after time. There's a lot of prejudice against Lowell, but if you grew up here you've got some of that fighting spirit in your blood.

And that isn't a bad thing, not at ALL!!

p.s. The accents were pretty much spot on. Not an easy thing to do. They're not "Boston" accents, they're Lowell accents. There's a difference, if you're from Lowell ... you can hear it.

We just saw the film this afternoon, loved it. I was born/raised in Lowell, and really enjoyed seeing glimpses of the old hometown (even brought tears to my eyes in the theater). I saw Mickey Ward fight many times on TV, particularly the three series of fights with Arturo Gatti, magnificent. I agree that the people of Lowell are great. They are hard working and honest. The "High on Crack Street" film by HBO was revolting. I know it was true, but it was not the Lowell I knew, and is certainly not representative of most of Lowell. I do hope "The Fighter" casts a good reflection on the City. Mickey Ward: thanks for being a positive image, wishing you the best.

Great article! Just saw "The Fighter" today and absolutely loved it. Christian Bale will definitely be in the running for Best Actor come Oscar time. Thank you for the insight into your city, and good luck in La-la Land!
