'Drag Me to Hell' stars Alison Lohman, Justin Long, David Paymer

There are 12 comments on the Chicago Tribune story from May 28, 2009, titled 'Drag Me to Hell' stars Alison Lohman, Justin Long, David Paymer. In it, Chicago Tribune reports that:

Director Sam Raimi gets back to his disreputable roots with "Drag Me to Hell," a title never to be confused with " Spider-Man 4" . This hellaciously effective B-movie comes with a handy moral tucked inside its scares, laughs and Raimi's specialty, the scare/laugh hybrid.

I disagree with most of your reviews but this time you are correct.
Good movie. Hopefully it will usher in an alternative to the appalling torture porn that dominates horror today.
Unfortunately the whining of the fan boys about the films PG-13 raating instead of an R rating is not a good sign.

Finally, somebody gets it. A good scary movie needs to pry loose, those deep credible fears of a normal life suddenly gone very wrong. A good scary movie does not depend on a numbing level of body goo flung at your face. Classic Hitchcock version of Psycho relied on worst fears of a normal person trying to go about a normal life and unwittingly taking a very bad turn. Not one impalement was shown, ever, but the viewers' cranial blood-emptying, vicarious involvement forever left them with the creeps that anybody could unwittingly end up in the Bates motel.

If this is half as good as Evil Dead 2, I'll be satisfied. When Raimi is on - and in his element - he's really good.

Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson both have the same roots--silly, hyperkinetic horror. They've since scored with big action movies, but as subsequent projects have shown (Spider-Man 3, King Kong), that well is shallow for both. Here's hoping this movie does gangbusters and Jackson is paying attention.

And if John Carpenter feels like poking his head out from wherever he's hiding, that'd be fine by me.

This leads to the question ... if this Gypsy woman can summon demons and spirits from Hell, why can't she conjure up money to pay her mortgage?

Sam Raimi is the absolute master at these movies. Evil Dead, 2, and Army of Darkness are 3 of my top 5 horror flicks.

I saw a preview of this movie on Tuesday - and was so glad I didn't pay to see it! This movie was funny - but in all the wrong ways - and not "believeable" as a horror story. Characters were very poorly developed, even for a B-movie horror flick, dialogue was laughable, plot 'twists' were telegraphed - no, hand delivered. Don't waste your money going to see this dreck.
