Womanist Musings: Queerty Needs To Stop Minding Queen Latifah's Business

There are 7 comments on the www.womanist-musings.com story from Mar 21, 2009, titled Womanist Musings: Queerty Needs To Stop Minding Queen Latifah's Business. In it, www.womanist-musings.com reports that:

Queerty a major GLBT (and a questionable "T" at that) blog has decided to declare that Queen Latifah is a lesbian. If the woman is indeed a lesbian, that is her business and it is not the right of an individual or an organization to declare so for her.

Like Anderson Cooper, people have been speculating about her sexuality for years. The GLBT community has no problem telling the state that it has no place in the bedroom of two consenting adults and yet some people in the community cannot seem to apply the same thing to themselves.

I agree that as members of a group of people that have judgments placed on them by the society we should avoid doing this to others.

When we drop into blogs and start insulting and harassing bigots with our own bigotry and insults we are lowering ourselves to their level and holding back our progress towards equality.

Coming out is a very personal decision and should not be made by anyone other than the individual.

Perez Hilton is a prime example of a queer that needs to STFU and mind his own business. In this case Queerty needs to follow that suggestion and STFU.

Totally agree.

Perez Hilton is on my list of people to slap in the face if I ever meet them in person.

Who gives a crap if somebody thinks you're gay or lesbian or whatever? Since when is there anything wrong with being gay?

Besides, NOBODY can out a person except for the person themself. Until the words come out of their own mouth, everything else is rumor or conjecture.

Well, I care. In fact, when you have a woman who consistenly baits the press with innuendo, half truths about herself and statements of ambiguity, I care. Ellen already paved the way, next came Wanda Sykes, if Ms. Latifah wants to keep her personal business seperate, then she must want to keep something hidden. If she had a man, and was a part of the hetero dominist culture, she'd be trotting him out for the publicity factor, like all the stars do. Name a few who don't, especially high profile black actors. We know about Halle Berry and her Calvin Klein model boyfriend, Iman and David Bowie, Um, Reese and Jake, Will and Jada, um, um, um. So, it doesnt wash. You wanna be a role model to the community, take the huge salaries paid to stars, but not represent? Sorry, doesn't wash. Unlike most people, if she comes out she will never go hungry, never be without housing, etc., etc. Bless Wanda Sykes for coming straight out. You'd think Latifah would want the same. Ask folks who work in the entertainment field, she's just doing the old duck and dodge like so many of them do, if you keep it quiet, and low, no one can ever say for sure. At her age, with her money, looks, position, etc., and she ain't married, doesn't have a man? Who are you trying to fool here. Black gay kids need a good role model, the more the merrier, as they probably can't relate to Ellen. At least Wandy has some real b.lls and doesn't just act it.

Reese and Jake? I agree about the role models, but one who lives in a closet is not a good role model. Not saying Latifah is in the closet, but your post suggests that. Sorry just don't agree with outing in this case.
