Bill Maher Says Atheism Stands in Way of an Emmy

Sep 14, 2010 Full story: ABC News 30

Bill Maher might be 0-for-26 at the Emmys, but he continues to dish it out with his ninth season of HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher." The foul-mouthed funnyman and political commentator, who receives his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next to the new W Hotel on Tuesday, recently discussed evolution, atheism and trees.

No Emmy?

He isn't all that entertaining, pure and simple.

The way things are in Hollywood you would think being an atheist would help.

Maher is intelligent and that comes across in his humor but I can go to lectures for that. There are just people that I have found funnier ie Bob Newhart, Billy Connelly,Gilda Radner etc.I am not looking to be challenged or provided with the impetus to examine yet another perspective. I just want to sit back and be entertained.

I am okay with him being an atheist I haven't participated in any delusional thinking for quite awhile either.

Maher is a one trick pony.Smarmy and smug, poking fun at rubes . I would be interested to see how many of his admirers would find him hilarious if he were of a different political persuasion. Now Carlin, one could disagree with his social commentary but not deny his talent and comic ability.Maher= way too arrogant to be likeable whose talent doesn't come close to justifying his attitude.

Maher sounds like Kurt Warner. Warner was benched in St. Louis because his play declined but whined that it was because of his "christian beliefs".

Maher is openly misogynistic (having joked about beating women) and believes in idiocy like the "anti-vaccine" movement. Somebody should smack him around for a change.

Besides that, who whines about not getting an award? If what you do is worthwhile and matters, you don't need adulation and public fawning.

His sense of humor isn't for everybody; the most I can give him is a smirk after a couple of minutes and then I lose interest. HBO as a channel is boring now too; I skip over it in search of something more interesting.

He has permanent sneer lines on his face and I can't stand people who have a sneering, superior attitude like his. His ego has grown much larger than his talent warrants. You sound very similar to him in outlook; insulting anyone who doesn't agree with your opinion. Not a very socially endearing quality.

I like the way you describe it,'permanent sneer lines', that's golden. I agree with you on all your other points in this post as well.

I agree with many of Bill's opinions and I disagree with others, but I'm with you, I don't find him particularly funny as compared to real/other comedians.

He sure is overconfident that there is no God. Fine to believe there is no God but to be that overconfident about it and jamming down the audience's throat.....
..that's pompous/superior. Not cool.

Hey, you anomalous virtual particle you, one minute you're there and there's no tellin where you'll pop up next....:)

Somehow I get the feeling that whether or not Bill Maher is entertaining is not going to be as hot a topic as whether or not there is "God".

He's an anti-capitalist Socialist pig, but as far as religion/The Sky Fairy is concerned, he's dead-on.

I'm sure my anit-anti-capitalism statement pisses off Dems, and my anti-religion statement pisses of Repubs. Oh well. Vote Libertarian, vote often. Then we'll have some true hope and change.

Well his overly proclaimed pot head status can't help his popularity with awards, either. Not that I have a problem with marijuana in general...just saying.

Consider the usual Hollywood crowd. I don't think a history with drugs would have any effect on one's chances at an Emmy.
