Cut/Paste:

Indian cinema has produced many movies related to the subject of psychiatry. In modern cinema, it is a subject that would be dealt with very differently from the manner in which Waheeda Rehman nurses a mentally disturbed Rajesh Khanna to normalcy in the 1969 classic Khamoshi.

The 1975 Hollywood great – One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest – shall remain etched in memory for the impeccable deranged behaviour portrayal of a recidivism criminal by Jack Nicholson. It was a path-breaking movie, just as Khamoshi, which was way ahead of its times.
Flawed

Waheeda, playing the role of a trained nurse dealing with acute mania, was flawless in her performance, leaving the audience in a trance towards the end when she loses her mental balance. But Dr. Sandeep Govil, a psychiatrist at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences, rates this as a major flaw in the otherwise superbly-crafted movie that commanded rave reviews by a London magazine on the subject of psychiatry.

“It was a beautiful movie that brought out the humane aspect of the treatment when dealing with such subjects. The movie was made in 1969 and there were few medicines to treat the patients. The doctors had to be involved at a personal level, giving emotional support with a lot of care and affection. It was a right movie at that time but not now,” he says.

Though he feels the climax of the movie was jarring “because it did not happen in real life. Today the subject is dealt through biological psychiatry. But it was a perfect portrayal of the subject in 1969, a landmark movie indeed.”

Rinkie’s Chote Papa was kind and benevolent towards Rinkie unlike her dummy Papa who ignored her because she was born as a girl.
