London, Sound check: The John Lennon legend rewritten Evening Standard 18.06.10 More articles by David Smyth John Lennon once told this newspaper that his band was 'bigger than Jesus'. He's certainly edging closer towards the son of God on the biopic front, with another film about to appear that makes him the main character in the most famous music ...

No, no, no! Not "bigger than Jesus", "most popular". Why are you scratching old wounds? John was very forthright and liked to tell the truth as he saw it but he was intelligent too. He didn't say they were greater or compared the Beatles to Jesus. "I said what I said and it was wrong or it was taken wrong".

Hi Greg John meant that at the time more kids would rather go see the Beatles play than go to church.Never said they were greater like the radio and newspapers twisted it around to sound like. The rednecks in Oklahoma sure got fired up and John's comment was taken totally out of context.Beatle bon-fires and a lot of stupidity was going on but it soon died down and Brian did have John give an apology on public T.V. because of all the hype that went on.

John would have been the last one to desire to be a legend, but he did like selling records and making a good living. "More popular" than, was the quote, and he was right, at the time, from his own personal point of view. The years have shown that he and George especially, were flabberghasted at Beatlemania. They saw the ridiculosity that the public was exhibiting in diefying a musical group. And, in many ways, they are proven correct. Nowadays public figures get away with what would have been considered real blasphemy. Nowadays a lot of media wouldn't blink an eye if some pop tart flips the almighty the bird. At any rate, if the truth be told, popular Christianity isn't Christianity at all.All we have to do is look at the societal morality of today to realize that Lennon was right. Christianity did "shrink and fade". It's too bad, but it is true.

Faith lies in people's hearts. When they search for Love and relief from all pains, they will find Jesus. "Love one another".

Look at the state of America, it's very clear that Christianity is not as popular as it used to be.

Without God, we are one nation under.

I prefer Allan over Allah, mainly because I'm real.
I guess if teen virgins are included in the deal, how can they not accept such an offer, they got me beat, I can only offer sandwiches and coffee.

We have bacon and eggs every Sunday before church.
I time the eggs by the bells, when they stop ringing it's time to flip the eggs. LOL.
In my mothers day, they would never eat eggs or baked beans before church for obvious reasons.
Another movie about John Lennon? How many people have made money off that name? Come to think of it I think I have seen more movies about John Lennon and/or the beatles than I have about Jesus.
How many Jesus movies have been made recently? Church Movies Inc. get your act together you're missing out on the big bucks there.

Good Day to you Aunt Melba.I wouldn't eat beans or pineapple rings before going to Church.Could send smoke rings.LOL There has been quite a few flicks made about John Lennon but Mel Gibson's Passion of Christ probably brought in more money than any John Lennon movie.I'm still looking to find How I won The war When Lennon cut his hair and did a side project from the Beatles about 1968 I think.I wished wierd AL would do a silly movie like a parody of John Lennon I think Wierd Al could do it real funny.

I thought the guy who played John in Backbeat looked like him. I wish Julian would play his father in something.

How I won the War is not going to be easy to find.
Yoko might re-release it and put us out of our misery.
Is Weird Al still working? He's clever and could have some fun with it.
Passion of the Christ got a lot of flak. People went in droves to see it and then bought the DVD later. We watch it every Easter. In the old days TV played Jesus movies during the Easter weekend. These days it's all sport whether the viewer wants it or not.

I agree Julian could play John very well and put on the glasses and have that Lennon look.Wierd Al still performs at Fairs and other venues. He is the best at singing funny parodies.I thnk How I won the War is out of print but it would be good to see Lennon playing Prvt.Gripweed again also Ringo and Peter Sellars in Magic Christian both are collectors items I don't have yet.

Like he said he would have preferred television than Jesus. That made it. He would have better avoided to refer to Jesus, Allah, Buddha, etc. Be smart John. There is plenty of fanatics or lunatics or both, out there. You were lucky in the sixties but someone lied in ambush later on. It was not this statement that killed you however, fame killed you. This statement just helped to it. In a mind of a lunatic or a churchy with not a wide understanding to the message that Jesus wanted to pass over to people proved to be fatal though.

The Moron who shot John wanted to be famous like John.John was a visionary but not a Phophet,He said that the Beatles meant more to kids than Jesus or going to church especially in England. The Bible thumpers took it all wrong and made it sound like John was being arrogant and saying that the Beatles were greater than God.What Killed John was that he became too trusting of his fans and one deranged fan shot him down and murdered him in cold blood.

Saw the Passion one time at the theatre, don't think I could ever watch it again, same for Schindler's list, both are well done movies, but very hard to watch.
Gibson did a fine job on it, it showed it as Pope John Paul the 2nd said, it is as it was.
Christ's beating was worse than I thought it was, makes me more appreciate what he went through for us, also makes me think how we don't deserve it, but mercy is mercy.

The only Beatle's related movie I saw was in 1985, it was a movie from 1979, Birth of the Beatles, never been on tape or dvd, but I can hope.
I recorded it off the t.v., but lost the tape later.
Pete Best was executive producer, but it seems very factual to me.

Hello Greg,Melba and Jack.

Hello Allan hope you had a nice weekend.I'd like to see the Pete Best produced story about the Beatles. Anthology is the best I've seen because of the three surviving Beatles telling it in their own words.I have all the tapes on VHS.I enjoy listening to George and Ringo talk because they were both funny.Even Paul was funny when he was talking about John Lennon making faces and spazzing out on stage sometimes.

Wish I could find it on dvd, gonna keep looking.
The Anthology was well done, love all 10 hours of it, a lot of well crafted art was put into it.
Have you checked out the 1988 movie, Imagine:John Lennon, it is right up there with the Beatle's Anthology.
I'm willing to bet that George's Living in the material world movie next Spring will be in the same class.
