If you take away all the sappy love songs, the teenie bopper early songs, and any song ringo sings, the beatles are rock and roll band. The stones may have had a handful of sappy songs, but they stayed true to their blues roots on every album up to 1975s black and blue (when disco crept in). Another problem for me with the beatles, is paul mcartney. Of all my favorite beatles songs, 90% of them are either lennon or harrison songs. There aren't many stones songs that my grandmother would enjoy, but paul mcartney has dozens of cheesey easy listening type songs that he wrote with the beatles that lennon clearly had no part in writing. If we were to break down the stones catalog, compared to the beatles song for song, one could argue that up to 1970, they were neck and neck. This is the point where the stones blow by the beatles in number of great songs. The beatles owned the 1960s by a small margin. However, the stones owned the 70s, and the early 80s, when paul and john were writing moderatly respectable albums with their tallentless wives (would mick or keith EVER put their wives on an album?). The stones are rock and roll, the beatles are someone you bring home to your mother, and great music for children to listen to. "Star f***ker", "little t&a" vs "fool on the hill" & "im looking through you". Not even a contest. One is rock and roll. One is elevator music. You decide.
The Rolling Stones!

50 years on and still rolling strong!

The Stones keep on rolling. Mccartney is still touring and he has wrote some wonderful tunes as well as sappy ones. Get Back and Back in the USSR- Helter Skelter just a few of the rockers he wrote to remind Andy that Paul was a super talent as well as Lennon and Harrison.I think all 3 of them wrote and sang some awesome tunes. Sure wished they were all still alive to see if they would of ever regrouped or not. Today we could use some musicians like the Stones and Beatles.

Don't get me wrong, I love the beatles, and paul can rock fo sure. Both bands have songs that give me goose bumps. But if there was a template to follow to be the quintissential rock and roll band, the stones would be it (for me). Mick jaggar may be the greatest performer of all time- and the live performance MUST be taken into account. Fair or not, the beatles quit live shows before they ever wrote their best material. The stones in their last full tour played a show in texas where they covered "bob wills is still the king" with ronnie wood on pedal steel....that was 2006- 41 yrs after the beatles last show! And they killed it! Check it on youtube its awesome. If the beatles had toured with sgt peppers, the white album and let it be, they win. But they didn't. Sandy koufax would have won 300 +++ games if he didn't blow out his elbow at 30. There's a reason its called the cy young award and not the sandy koufax award. Same reason clapton is better than hendrix. Body of work.

Have you got the new Clapton CD yet? I heard one song off of it and it sounded good.I'm a huge Clapton fan. Hendrix was great but Clapton can sing better and play more different styles than Hendrix did.Ronnie Wood is a super talented guy plus he can draw and make it look almost a photo.
