Richard Carter hits the nail on the head. When parents read to their kids as toddlers, require that homework is completed every day at a set time and then checks to ensure homework is done, kids will do well in school. The schools biggest problem is uncaring parents.
Linda, I couldn't disagree more. I hated music class more than any other class I had to take. Exercises on the flutaphone, having to listen to old fogie music that had no relevance to my life or where I was going, I'd rater study algebra. Btw, I have an MA and work as an analyst in the defense industry, so hating music class didn't make me turn out bad. It was just time wasted.

Are not music classes from From grades 7 and up electives? I do not recall being required to take music courses in ANY grade. So you chose an elective that bored you...your bad. But basic music does teach algebra if you don't get too bored and pay attention.
