It is amusing that they invented a new term for black people to lump them together with illegal aliens.

"People of Colour"

Now you all can be associated with the Arabs and Hispanics and really marginalized by the liberals who love you, as voters...

Maybe they'll kick all of the blacks out of Arizona. After all, blacks here on Topix claim to be from Mars.

The expression "people of color" has been around since at least the 18th and 19th centuries. And was adopted at one time by many African-Americans themselves. It is not a "new" term invented to lump blacks with Hispanics or whomever.
Whether it is being used in that new way you suggest by racists is another matter.
It is certainly true that as the non-white part of the population increases, many of them (not just blacks)now refer to expressions like "people of color" to refer to blacks, hispanics, asians or whichever people who are considered to be non-white.

I really don't understand why black folks are soo concerned about illegals because we have are own issues. Al should be outraged over the high unemployment. Illegals broke the law and I'm tired of supporting their American born kids. They get free public aid, healthcare and education. The public schools are suffering becasue there is communication breakdown with the teachers and Spanish speaking students and family.

I had never heard it until very recently, and I am on the forefront of racial relations....

A quick trip to Wiki confirms exactly what I thought, progressive Democrats are trying to lump black Americans in with illegal aliens so they can scream racism and force the United States to give them the same deal as the descendants of slaves got.

As much as I despise the term, "African-Americans" for black Americans, this 'people of colour' is something you lot should avoid or risk being lumped in with Hispanics when things turn bad because of them! The plight of the slaves is vastly different than the illegal aliens and I find it offensive to my African brothers who rightfully earned a place under the sun of the United States.

"Person of color is a term used, primarily in the United States, to describe all people who are not white. The term is meant to be inclusive among non-white groups, emphasizing common experiences of racism. People of color is preferred to both non-white and minority, which are also inclusive, because it frames the subject positively; non-white defines people in terms of what they are not (white), and minority, by its very definition, carries a subordinate connotation.

Although the term citizens of color was used by Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1963, and other uses date to as early as 1818, people of color did not gain prominence for many years.

Influenced by radical theorists like Frantz Fanon, racial justice activists in the U.S. began to use the term people of color in the late 1970s. By the early 1990s, it was in wide circulation. Both anti-racist activists and academics sought to move understandings of race beyond the black-white binary then prevalent.."

Sharpton just sees more people he can represent in cases of 'racism' by the white devils. All of the points you make are very valid concerns, and reducing the numbers of illegals can only benefit the black community.

Black and white may have their problems, but they are all Americans and stand together on most issues. These Mexicans are parasites who wish to take over the United States.

It is a well known fact Mexicans are more racist than white people. Sharpton has lost his mind. You guys should remind him where his bread is buttered.

If it's true that the vast majority of humans who are exploited by corporations are dark, then how this group is described may not be as relevant as how they are treated, e.g.,health, education, civil protections, employment opportunities, etc. While it is not to the immediate advantage of Blacks to be lumped into a basket containing folks from differing ethnicities: low wage Mexicans in particular, it may be a positive step to realize that we are looking at a global phenomena. How different, for example, is it for a Mexican man or woman to leave home and face the hardship of walking across a barren desert; how is their trial different from that of slaves--here in the U.S.--who risked everything to commit to traveling the underground railroad, only--at best-- to end up in a north America where apartheid was a dominant institution.

I don't know what you found in Wikipedia, but that is not a very reliable source. Almost any well educated person can tell you that.
Expressions like "colored" and "people of color" have been around for centuries, and it's "prominence" has varied over time.
As for "progressive Democratic" conspiracies to lump blacks with "illegal aliens", I don't give much credence to such rumors and paranoia.
As for what Blacks or Latinos choose to call themselves, it's their prerogative. It's a matter to be resolved among themselves, and do not require the approval of others.

Al sharpton is a disgrace and need to be shot. How dare he try to make blacks fight for these criminals. What part of illegal alien does he not understand. These people have no right to break the law just because they feel like it.

Al Sharpton is an old time media whore, always looking for some way to get himself in the news, even if it's a hoax, such as he was made a fool of in the Tawana Brawley case. I have no respect for Al Sharpton, clearly, he's looking to make himself respectable. At least with Jesse Jackson, he's usually got a good reason for whatever cause he takes up.....but not Al Sharpton.

Al doesn't give a flying fuucckk* about black folks and yes, he is a media whor_e! I think it is about time that Arizona was smart enough to take action against these illegals. In my community, I feel as though I am in Mexico and almost, everything is in Spanish. They are now moving to Washington state in truck loads.

I agree and I will be contacting his stupid Action Network org. to let him know that we don't support his stance!

Big Al and Uncle Jesse are both veterans at political grandstanding. I'm tired of both of them. Both of them are old washed up remnants of the Civil Rights All Star generation and we are on our third Hip Hop generation. My feelings toward the two is the opposite: Although I didn't like the Tawana Brawley incident, Big Al has gotten arrested on many occasions protesting various socio-political wrongdoings that none of us would ever go to jail for. If it wasn't for ML King, Uncle Jesse would just be some dumbazz loudtalking reverend moving state o state trying to escape the law so his baby momma can't get him arrested for unpaid child support. Just my opinion.

Well, that's great to hear! I sometimes feel that I'm in Mexico and illegals are moving to my state in bus loads! When I go out to eat, the workers all speak Spanish and they can't understand English. I ask to speak to a supervisor and she speaks broken English. This is the honest truth!
