Drown out bigotry with a collective voice of reason

Dec 6, 2011 | Posted by: Rick in Kansas | Full story: businessclarksville.com

Okay, this is awkward. Iíve found myself in a rather peculiar situation of being very critical of anti-gay evangelical bullies, yet embracing the same faith of those bullies. You know the type ó they have a wide range of ways to be either condescending or outright hostile toward those of us who happen to be gay. And itís all because ďThe Bible Says SoĒ or something.

My awkwardness revolves around a simple, impossible-to-get-around fact. I am Christian. I worship the same Jesus Christ that they (claim to) worship. We share the same creed: Salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Yet, because of the fact that I am openly gay, Iím a pariah in the Christian community, a complete outcast. Not that Iím complaining, really. I donít mind being unwelcome to a bunch of people who judge me based on nothing other than the fact that I happen to be in a committed, monogamous, stable, loving, long-term relationship with another man.

One's religion and interpretation/translation of the bible is no excuse for oppression, discrimination, and bigotry.

While we would seem to be part of the same Christian body, fundamentalists refuse to follow the Commandments of Christ, while most other Christians make this the basis for their faith. This is the great divide. It is how you can tell a real Christian from a faux Christian. Do they follow Christ in His Commandments of love? Real Christians do.

No doubt you claim to be a "christian" too.

Do you also hate Jews and want to see them gassed and burned in ovens?
How about Muslims?
Christians?
Never mind on the last one, your bigotry is crystal clear.

This is over dramatized. There's plenty of Christians who aren't sexually deranged, homosexually fixated bigots who regularly ignore hundreds of buybull passages...when those passages don't dovetail with their prejudices.

No cretin, no one said your xstain talibangelicals can't marry, adopt, serve openly, be protected from arbitrary firing.

Don't act like it's your rights being taken away in this secular society. That would be lying. And jeebus don't like liars.

I don't think you got the point. Yes, there are plenty of Christians who aren't "sexually deranged, homosexually fixated bigots who regularly ignore hundreds of buybull passages...". But the point is they don't speak up. They continue, save for a few, to let the bigotted, hateful "christians" define what Christianity is.

Nope, I just hate false christians such as yourself. You're as ignorant as they come.

You sit and cheer every gay child that commits suicide because of your ignorant hate filled bigotry. Even your false God will punish you for it.

I think what you say is untrue. There are many Christian denominations, Christian pastors, and other Christians who welcome and accept gay and lesbian people, and DO take part in social advocacy.

(And the other poster is clearly rabidly insane.)

Are you projecting your hate onto another poster?? He said nothing about hating anyone, but just commented on your post. It was hateful, full of lies, and not even close to being Christian. I am a Christian,so I know what Christians are like. You are not one of us.

You liberal Christians, Muslims and Jews just don't get it do you? You say, as the person in the article says to Dan Savage: "We are NOT all like that." But the plain fact is MOST of you are like that and you liberal aren't getting a lot of converts from that other side. Basically, organized religion is a pile of superstitious nonsense.

I don't think believing a rock has a spirit shows much reasoning either, but at least people who participate in indigenous religion don't go around bothering other folks who choose not to.

Do you ever read what people post, or do you just read into it what you want. I said there were some who spoke out, but they were few in number. I don't know the numbers, but my guess is that if you divide the number who speak out by the number against us, you will find a low percentage. In other words, a few.

I think the real problem is that Christians speak out only if they're members of a congregation that is already supportive. Congregants tend to suffer through whatever nonsense their pastor delivers every Sunday without criticism--which they assume would be blasphemy. There are few religious leaders who encourage thoughtful discussion.

Probably true, but I am not concerned with the excuses for their non-action, but the consequences of that non-action. That is the exact problem with religion......it damands no dissent.

I count myself among the few. But then, the fundies would say I'm not a Christian, while I am more Christian than they will ever be.

Hopefully, your example will be an inspiration to others. I do want to let you know that, although I do not believe in Christianity, I respect people, like you, who live up to its principles. You are a voice in the wilderness though, I fear, preaching to deaf ears.
