'Across the Universe' doesn't quite 'Come Together' -

Full story: Baltimore Sun

Across the Universe is disarming, discombobulating and disappointing. Director Julie Taymor has torn page after page from the Beatles' songbook and used it to assemble an allusive pop history of the 1960s.

We must have seen diffrent films. This is one of the most moving and innovative films in years!!! Don't knock the unfamiliar. We must try and keep breaking barriers in order to maintain and build the youth's creativity. Taymor was brave enough to put her reputation on the line for a new and fresh musical which dares to use the Beatles as her score. An extremely creative and entertaining voyage.

I couldn't disagree with you more.
I love this movie.
I think Julie Taymor and the actors/actresses did a wonderful job.
I have been a Beatles fan for many, many years and I think it is wonderful to hear their songs in a different light, and to see such a wonderful story centered around them.
The movie may be a bit slow in spots, but I don't think it's horrible by any means.
I think it's a fun night at the movies - at least that's what I had when I saw it.

I also disagree. I love this movie.
It's use of special effects, woven into the moving lyrics of the beatles sends you into a trance.
Although, I agree I was waiting for "Hey Jude" and "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" the entire movie.

It was still beautifully done, and deserves to be recognized for it's innovation.

Have we learned nothing from Peter Frampton and the Bee-Gees?

Moral of the story is that the songs of The Beatles will always be superior to any flimsy vehicle designed to contain them, even if you slow them down and throw a lot of eye candy at them. Even The Beatles themsleves could not do this as evidence by every movie of their's beyond A Hard Day's Night.

The only context that can collect The Beatles songs into one story is the story of the group itself. A Hard Day's Night came closest to achieving this.

This was one of the best movies I've ever seen-- there's a reason this guy writes for the Baltimore Sun and not the New York Times.. read THIS for a better review http://movies.nytimes.com/2007/09/14/movies/1...

I disagree wholeheartedly with your opinion of the movie. My husband (age 84), my friends (78, 79) and I (67) thought the movie was brilliant ..... creative, of course, and the use of the music, individually and collectively, was great.
When critics like you continue to give "cute, stupid" movies great reviews while sneering at this brilliant imaginative movie reminds me that all opinions, including those that are professionally bought, are simply that - one man's (or woman's opinion)!

This movie has left me with tears in my eyes after being incredibly moved by its visual and aural beauty. I can't stop thinking about it. Either the critics have no connection to their emotions and have become too intellectual, or they grew up post-age 1960's and have no memories of that musically superior, never-to-be duplicated, period in time.

Are you out of your freakin' mind? This was, hands down, the best film I have EVER seen. It was powerful, artistic, soul-stirring, and elating. What you are on? Downers?

haha i hate you movie critics! you don't know a great movie when its right infront of your own eyes! This movie is flawless, with amazing color, perfect themes and meaning, and REMARKABLE acting! After reading many reviews that stated such comments of the movie being a "bad Beatles music videos" i was terrified! The reviews are all over the place, some say its tremendous others like YOU! say its horrible! well now its my turn to state my review:
JULIE TAYMORE DOES IT AGAIN!
the movie is perfection. not only does she creat a master piece of art and music, it holds meaning. and as you terribly state that the movies music is "distructive" Taymor makes it her own. the only reason the critics are complaining is because you know the original! this isn't a movie based on THE BEATLES! its a revolutionary movie! and the beatles cuased a revolution! the music is to die for! and i have to disagree with all the movie critics that say taymor flunked. because its people like you who make Spider man three (three stars out of four).
LISTEN! PLEASE!
the only reason these movie critics are hating on taymor is because for once a movie hold meaning and is an indepth oringinal master piece. none of the movie critics INCLUDING YOU! MICHAEL! have the depth to appreciate this revolutionary masterpiece.

I loved this movie! Any real Beatles fan would appreciate it in all its glory. I enjoyed picking out all the details pertaining to The Beatles. It's so much more than just a love story. This is absolutely the best movie I have seen all year. I can't understand why it got such bad reviews. The scenes were unbelievable! I can't wait for this movie to come out on DVD. I could easily watch this movie over and over again.

i think you've tapped into a key issue that is inherent with trying to make a story out of such strange and often nonsensical lyrics... but i would not suggest that all momentum of the movie was lost in the weaving of so many stories. if anything, i saw it as a broadening of the scope which taymor was trying to convey; she was clearly attemting to make a piece which covered all aspects of the social movements of the time (racism, sexual identity, hippies and the like). i believe she cleverly infused the beatles lyrics to portray these various concepts, but yes, something was lost in translation...

i found that her weakness was found in continuity... sometimes as a viewer you felt as if a scene was left out. it seemed as if they had trouble connecting the dots between characters... though they did try with the father-son relationship, i thought it fell a bit flat. I didn't end up empathizing with any particular character and wondered why certain ones were included (mainly the lead singer and the girl from ohio).
I often had trouble deciding if the scene was reality or a drug induced trip, which may have been intentional, but i would have appreciated if the more psychadelic moments (such as the bus ride and the strange circus) would have been given some introduction. Some moments were too cryptic for my taste, but the visuals were stunning to say the least. Even if you couldn't appreciate all the hidden meanings, im sure there was value found in Taymor's artistic style.
To be honest, i was hoping that the story would focus more on the love story of Jude and Lucy, but overall I found it was a powerful film worth seeing again.

by the way, that's the most harsh i would ever judge the film. otherwise, its absolutely breath taking.
i recommend it to everyone. all that other business is my own opinion. i would hope in the future that you would try to be a bit more objective when giving a movie review, for the sake of people who might want to form their own opinions...

I really liked this movie a lot, actually...I didn't have any trouble following it after the initial introduction of characters, and I found it very creative how they gave the back story for each one and then showed how they all came to be together. The singing and the visual aspects of the film were just phenomenal!

There's a lot more to like about this movie if you just take it for what it is: a tribute to the Beatles music and the monumental things that were happening in that era.

I loved it so much I want to see it again!:)

As a So-Cal musician that grew up in the 60’s. the Beatle era, and have been in the entertainment industry my whole life, I say this movie is nothing short of artistic genius. Obviously Mr. Sragow was not there. Every frame of this movie was carefully crafted, the lighting, the sets… and the music, so different than the way the boys did it, really gave it justice and made you appreciate the phenomenal quality of Beatles songwriting. An excellent era depicting story, great cinematography, great acting, great voices and outstanding music, dude, that’s entertainment!!! Don’t listen to Sragow, he’s a … whatever, just go see for yourself… or miss out on a great couple of hours..,
