Wasn't very impressed with the Wichita Newspaper write up, didn't even tell what state Cherryvale is in. Poorly composed for someone that apparently writes for that paper.
Happy Birthday 'Ethel', hope they have enough cake and punch for the big party!

It's pretty pathetic Cherryvale has nothing else to celebrate, other than the life of a supporting actress from back before t.v.was in color. I love how small towns hang on to nothing like it's something

I wasn't trying to inflate my ego or falsely raise my self esteem. So no, i don't feel any bigger as you put it.

I think it's pathetic that a town is so desperate to feel connected with non-rural America, that they desperately hold on to a irrelevant supporting actress from the 50´s. Don't feel too ashamed, Cherryvale isn't the only small redneck town to do this.

"I can't stand those loud-mouthed b*tches," as my father used to say about both Lucy and Ethel.

It's really pretty sad that Cherryvale continues to celebrate this person. I have often wondered what Vance contributed or gave back to Cherryvale so I did a little research. To put it bluntly, she has done absolutely nothing (given back) to the town of Cherryvale. She left Cherryvale when she was 6 years old. Later in life she had an affair with a married man and cavorted with anyone who she thought could further her career. Heck, the one main person in Cherryvale who keeps her name alive has done more for the town of Cherryvale than Vance. Surely there is someone else Cherryvale could celebrate.

Most famous people rarely remember their birthplace. Louise Brooks, a silent film actress, along with Frank Bellamy, author of the Pledge of Allegiance, are others celebrated in the coming months. Vance did more for Albuquerque since they funded her start in NYC. We have to keep moving forward with different kinds of things so that the community does not become stagnant.
