"Professor Sprout" actress says her gay confession led to mother's stroke

THE character actress Miriam Margolyes has disclosed that confessing to her mother she was lesbian led to her having a severe stroke from which she never fully recovered. “I was in my late twenties when I told my mother,” says Margolyes on Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4 today. “I spoke to her about an affair with a woman and three days later she had this stroke. I realised it was a mistake on my behalf. It was an indulgence of me to tell her that.” Margolyes, 67, who has starred in films including The Age of Innocence and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, uses the episode to argue against the trend for actors and public figures to speak openly about their personal lives. “I don’t agree with actors talking about their sex life,” she says, advising others to “keep such things to yourself” because of the distress they can bring. Oh, please. I highly doubt that her mother had a stroke because of the information provided by the daughter. Her mother probably already knew. And, even if it is true, that does not mean that everyone should stay in the closet for fear of killing their parents. The more that people come out, and the more society learns, the less shocked they will be when their children tell them of their sexual orientation. This whole story sticks of self pity or self-serving publicity to me.

Her mother had a stroke from clogging her arteries eating too much grivenes and schmaltz.

And, it was over forty years ago. I think its time to wake up to the at least the ninties, never mind the 21st century

Sorry, but I agree whole heartedly with Miriam. What transpires behind closed doors between consenting adults is no one elses business. Demonstrative emotions are always better shared in privacy and with intimacy. Straight or gay displays of affection need not be garish and overt actions which may make others uncomfortable. After all life is not just about individual sexual eccentricities. Live, Love and Laugh!

Well enough said but there's a double standard on PDA's. Those who are gonna have a heart attack at seeing two men holding hands in public need to kick the bucket anyways.
