DUH! Is it any surprise that African-Americans didn't want to support this faux holiday?
What Southerners won't admit and what some erstwhile historians would have you believe is that the Civil War was NOT about slavery. Certainly there were northerners who had no intention of getting rid of their slaves, and there were southerners who never owned a slave, but the war was more about slavery than anything else!
"Everything stemmed from the slavery issue," says Princeton professor James McPherson whose book, Battle Cry of Freedom is widely judged to be the authoritative one-volume history of the war.
