Hi All,

It was a gloomy rainy weekend here. With all of the hullabaloo of moving and getting settled over the past few weeks I took the opportunity to make a pot of tea, wrap up in a warm blanket and watch a few movies. The best of the bunch were:

The Darjeeling Limited: Great movie about going on a spiritual journey filled with Indian cough medicine and a snake. Oh course the spiritual journey goes a little sideways along the way. The subtlety and silences in this movie really made it. Definitely on par with Wes Anderson's precious work like Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums! It was definitely quirky and quiet!

Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad): A Brazilian movie about BOPE the elite special police force. Quite violent as it deals with the sellers in the favela's of Rio. The story focuses on a BOPE captain who is wishing to leave the force and two friends who get intertwined into the story as they look to join BOPE. Definitely a clear look at the harsh realities; the violence, poverty and corruption that plagues Brazil. If you have previously seen Cidade de Deus (City of God) then Tropa de Elite is a MUST!

Two movies that I liked in one post (Tannenbaums and City of God). I don't have much time for movies and it's usually quite spontaneous, so I have a box of Bond Movies I am working through. I always find the movies entertaining to watch.
I watched American Gangster recently, it was pretty good. Beyond the front face of the movie, there were underlying themes that any good movie has.

Travellin007, i must say that it sounds as though you have excellent taste in movies. I must ask though, what had prompted you to see City of God? I ask because it is not a movie that is well known outside of South American. Certainly many that I know have not seen or heard of it. It was such a great movie. I must recommend to you that you see Tropa de Elite. You will not be disappointed.

Are you a fan of Wes Anderson? I am a fan of his work and always get a sly smile by the moments of silence and introspection that he can bring to a moment of comedy. the Darjeeling limited was no exception, it really was quite wonderful. I would rate it alongside Rushmore.

I have not viewed American Gangster. It did get good reviews so it sounds like it is worth a seeing.

I have just "received" (not downloaded of course) El Orfanato (The Orphanage) a spanish film. Unfortunately, I do not think it was the film i intended to get! How funny!

Yes, you can get the movie with subtitles. I hope you can read! hehehe

Just cuz I have a little bit of red neck in me don't mean I can't read! I can read Heather's posts perfectly fine. I can also read Maxim I swear I don't look at the picures.

Yeah, maybe I like the action more then foreign ffilms. Ain't my thing. LAst movie I saw was Juno. It was cute, I will give it that, maybe not my thing but the wife wanted to rent it.

Yes indeed, I always check out the foreign film section when I have the chance. I remember the jacket grabbing my attention, and noting how unpretentious it was and thought it worth a shot. I must say the one scene when the kids have the gun is one of the most intense movie scenes I have ever seen.
I must admit, I did not know both had been made by the same person, but yes, I suppose I am now a fan of Wes! I will take your recommendation, sounds to me like it will be quite worth watching.(To be honest, movies of this nature are typically the 'second' movie of the night, where I am usually watching while others are snoring, lol). I may start to watch more, by renting and taking movies along with me when traveling. One can only work so much, or watch only so much television (that isn't sports!

You have good taste! Perhaps though I am not objective as we seem t have some similar tastes (other then James Bond, my apologies). City of God in truth is one of my all time favorite movies simply because it is raw and unpretentious as you said. It is such a raw look at the favelas and the corruption of Brazil that we westerners simply do not see. We see Ipanema and copacabana, etc but not what the reality is for the masses. Now of course, it is a movie. That said, it is based on a true story and really does illustrate the desperation. Please do watch Tropa de Elite.

Now it is your turn, recommend something!

I did not mean to imply that you can't read. And you are right, heather's posts and Maxim are the pinnacle of the literati!

In truth, I have not watched Juno! How terrible but I have been behind on movies the last while!

Did you actually rent Rambo? I can't imagine wathing Mr. Stallone for 2 hours reliving his glory! But just because it is not my cup of tea certainly does not mean that there is not a audience for it of course!

And no, I don't think you are a red neck at all!

I will seek the movie out the first opportunity. With luck it will be a multi-day due to being foreign and I can take it with me.
My apologies, I am quite bad at remembering movies I have watched :( Once I had to go back because after the first 30 seconds I realized I had seen the movie before lol. I know I have seen a couple good ones recently, now to remember what they were.....

That is terrible 007, how can you forget such a thing? That makes me laugh! Did they at least give you a refund, or did you just throw the movie in the return bin with your head hung low?

Tropa de Elite was released on DVD recently, but I am not sure if it was a North American release or if it is only released in Brazil as of yet. Admittedly, my version may have been received from an "alternate" source. ;)

I think the DVD version that has been released was also edited differently for a worldwide audience in that some of the violence and language has been watered down and lightened.

Now start thinking and remember those movies!

I didn't actually rent it little lady it was just a joke. The weekend was too nice not to be outside quadding with the boys.

That is a little red neck I guess. If that is all someone can say to insult me is that I am a bit of a redneck then pass me a Pilsner and call me a red neck! LOL!

Due to the fact that I was back in half hour and there was no way I could have watched it, they let me get another movie, lol! I have alot more embarassing stories, but let's save them for another time.
Fair enough on the alternate source, I have some as well! I will take a look for it. If the movie names come back to me, I will be sure to pass them along!

Embarrassing stories? You can not dangle that carrot and then walk away!

Do tell! hehe

Alright, just one then!
Last year I was in Orlando and had a very early flight back home. I had to take a shuttle to the airport and arrived in good time as their were no other passengers. And so I thought it's a good opportunity to get some work done. The battery was going dead and I had to find an outlet, found one two gates down and across the aisle. I was getting alot of work done and then I looked at the time. Yup, the gate was empty! The flight left without me lol. And so instead of a direct flight home, I wound up having to wait another three hours to leave and take a connection, making it home after dinner time.
Quite embarassing I'd say!

“Have fun doing it!!”

Hey 'k, jump in where you want! Anyone who plays nicely is welcome here, I think.

I haven't given my choices as I'm not a great movie watcher. I have a few favourites, but I could not claim any of them as having watched "lately".

:)
