I am an honorably discharged veteran having served 15 years in the U. S. Navy. While on active duty, I served onboard USS WABASH (AOR-5) and was forced to have to work for a psychotic executive officer named LCDR Childers.
This man was insane. He was suffering from PTSD, but was also an acknowledged atheist, a practicing alcoholic and was going through a divorce. I worked in a personnel office and WABASH had around 430 given officers and enlisted at any given time. LCDR Childers would routinely, with no previous heads-up he would give me, order me to do between 7-8 discharges which had to be done by 12pm, after morning quarters, which was around 7am.
Each discharge would take between 3-4 hours each, leaving me to do at least 20 hours of work in a 5-hour period. He would come down to my office, raging mad, take his fist from the deck and hit a big stainless steel counter in the office AS HARD AS HE COULD, and just start going off. "Goddammit, do I have to do EVERY GODDAMM MOTHER FUCKING THING HERE MYSELF!!!!" would be part of his insane tyrade. Instead of being the XO, he should have been in a mental institution, given heavy doses of a sedative and put in a straight jacket. Instead, I had to work for this lunatic.
It wasn't just me. There was an NC1, who was forced to cross-rate back to a PN1, Larry McCrary, and was the command was getting ready to burn him at the stake before he managed to cut his own orders off the ship. YN3 Ross Haith was transferred to deck division and forced to slush wires before he contacted his representative, Alan Cranston, who contacted the CO, CAPT Matheny, and afterwards, YN3 Haith transferred back to X/Nav division.
In short, he managed to ruin my life and my naval career, and I still have yet to recover from this horrible experience. What's even worse is that the VA won't provide help or compensation, even though I have continuously and repeatedly sought help. It's my opinion that the navy's primary concern is not national security, it's public image. The chief petty officers who were onboard WABASH, which included PNC "The slimebag" Dionisio, YNCS "The yes-man" Cailing and NCCM "The lush" Miller need to be held accountable for their treasonus actions.
I have put in several claims for disability, and have been denied each time. The VA claims "there's no documentation to support your claim." I tried to explain to them that when you're dealing with someone who was as psychotic as LCDR Childers was, I didn't have the wherewithall to rationally explain to him "Excuse me, sir, but I feel as though I'm under too much stress. Let me go up to medical so I can have this documented." He probably would have killed me (literally).
As life goes for me now, I can't hold a job, I've been on numerous anti-depressant medications, none of which have really helped, I'm in arrears in child support to the tune of around $20,000 and counting, and I still can't get help from the VA. I was also homeless for five and a half years. If it wasn't for the care and compassion of the lady I currently live with, I'd still be in the homeless shelter "system."
My next step is taking this to the press. The slugs at the VA would change their tune, perhaps, if their lack of concern and competence was exposed.
