Bill Hunter: R.I.P.

Every time some actor or actress dies, one that I had more than a casual and largely indifferent acquaintance with, I can’t help compare and contrast their life trajectory with my own. Bill Hunter died yesterday. He was 71—four years older than I am. He started out on Australian television in 1966 in the same year I decided to be a teacher of Inuit children in the Canadian Arctic and pioneer for the Canadian Baha’i community to that remote part of Canada.

Hunter became a prolific performer in television and feature films, films in which he often played the strong, opinionated, archetypal gruff Australian whose exterior belies a softer heart. Hunter’s film debut had been several years earlier as an extra in 1957 film The Shiralee. I was only 13 at the time, in grade 8, and in love with baseball, hockey and at least three girls---none of whom really knew.

I moved on from Inuit kids on Baffin Island to southern Ontario and then Australia by the 1970s. I could list Hunter’s many notable movie roles and portrayals from 1978 to 2010, and I could list my many roles and portrayals, but not in the movies. I will leave readers to google the subject of Hunter’s life, the awards and honours he received as well as the eulogies which are beginning to pour in for this popular man.-Ron Price with thanks to Wikipedia, 22 May 2011.

A fine actor, a true story teller, a great friend,
sorely missed, much loved, a journeyman, an
inspiration to fellow actors, a gentleman, and
a rogue who touched the lives of many a soul.

“As long as the director told me where to stand
and what to say, I was happy; it's a job, a craft,
but there's no art involved; you need much of
common sense, and a reasonably rough head,
You put on the makeup, the wardrobe and that
is half the performance--this upsets the purists,
but never mind, they don't work as much as I!!”

At 6pm on Thursday 26 May raise your glass as
a salute & give a final farewell to old Bill Hunter.*

* funeral on Thursday afternoon 26 May 2011.
