I'm glad people are saying Benny + Joon because that remains such an underrated performance. My favorites are Benny + Joon, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and Donnie Brasco. He was great in Sweeney Todd, but I wish he would get away from the larger than life fantasy characters covered in makeup and go back to playing the complex "ordinary" human beings he plays so beautifully. There happens to be a wonderful novel called The Dogs of Babel which is currently being or has already been made into a film. The last name I heard for the lead was Steve Carrel. Nothing against Carrel, but Johnny would have been perfect for that part.

Gilbert Grape was a classic JD movie, yes, I love his wacky characters, but it is time for him to land back to Earth with his movies.

Actually among Johnny's best performances include: The Libertine, Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd (in my opinion) But my favorite because it always gets me in the gut is one that was never released in the U.S. "The Brave" in which Johnny and Danny Depp wrote the screenplay and of course is Johnny's directorial debut. It won a Palm d'Or at Cannes but was panned by very biased critics. Wish he'd consider reediting and releasing it finally in the U.S. Awesome movie!

My favorite is Edward Scissorhands with Public
Enemy running a close second. I really can't choose because I love everything he is in. He elevates the performances of other actors and
enhances even a mediocre film

I think most of his movies are wonderful, but I must say Pirates is my bias. It was the first movie of his that I saw, and I've always had a deep love for the ocean and all off it's lore :)
