Rajesh Khanna
Anand in 1971. Namak Haram in 1973. IIFA Awards in 2009. Three decades after they waged celluloid war, Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna staged a dramatic comeback in front of 11,000-odd people at the Cotai Arena in The Venetian Resort Macau Hotel on Saturday night.

AB as the brand ambassador of IIFA and Kaka as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.


Bachchan introduced Khanna and somewhere in the middle of his eloquent speech said:“Watching his craze among his fans, I wondered if I could ever make it as a hero in this industry.”

Then Rajesh Khanna in a bizarre orange pyjama-kurta walked up to the stage, gave Bachchan a long hug and even a peck on his cheek.

As Bachchan stood behind him with not a muscle on his face twitching, Khanna spoke less about himself and more about his Babumoshay. From the opening lines of “Amit ne mujhe mauka diya main aaj aapke beech mein hoon...” to Anand lines like “Babumoshay eto bhalobasha bhalo noy” to the sign-off “Yeh mujhe gham nahin zamana badal gaya/ zindagi hai tumse, tum badal naa jaana”, it was high drama, Kaka-style.

But that wasn’t the only piece of drama at the big awards night in what was the 10th anniversary of IIFA celebrations. Presenting some tinsel tidbits from the five-hour gala...

Folks--Is this Kaka being magnanimous or Kaka wanting back in the industry with AB's 'maddat'? I'm feeling a little sick reading all this, seems like he was fawning on him almost. Say it ain't so. Those who did see the awards, is that how it came across? Or does it sound like this because of the reporting?

He should have retained his calm- He is better actor than the OTHER. I think he( Kaka) wanted to play to the galleries. Since the galleries were full of HIS people, he may have done it deliberately. In none of his interviews recently he has done all this. A clear picture will emerge once this is shown- Abhijit I think has mentioned the date and the channel somewhere in the forum. Of course, the reporting makes it look as if he ( Kaka) was pleasing HIM.

I agree - It was wise of Kaka. With HIS chamchas in the show, it would have been unwise not to praise HIM. Waqt Waqt Ki Baat hai.....samjhe na...

Politically correct is ok but is excessive fawning necessary? We thought he was above all this. Atul Maini reported that he was at an almost zen-like state--all above the fray. What happened? Dil dukha diya Kaka ne yeh karke.

In my opinion Kaka has not made such a statement which reflects that he is buttering Amit. As per the report available with us Kaka as usual delivered his speech by thanking the organizers of iifa including Amit followed by urdu mixed Shairi and some dialogues of his classic Anand. There is no question of 'Dil Dukhana' as I think.

He knows his un-deservness very well; so he has to be modest via which he used to manage Doctorate degrees and other baseless awards without deserving for the same.

In all fairness, i find Kaka's speech well balanced...After all, he had to match AB's

No need to analyze too much.
Kaka is known for making drama/filmi dialogues on stage or during interviews.Many a times, he seems to lose control over his actions/words unlike AB who is very shrewed and come prepared for everything.
How can you forget that once on stage he was continuously trying to get closer to Priti Zinta telling her that" You made my evening" or something like that.Priti was obviously not feeling comfortable listening to all that.
Let us not get into it too much.
Kaka is an emotional personal and seems that he still misses his heydays.

I do not understand such irrelevant discussions; afterall Kaka has said nothing exaggarated in this award function; he just expressed his inner feelings and delivered dialogues from his classic Anand and few 'shairies' and Bachchan just expressed the historical facts about Kaka's unparallel craze and popularity. I agree Atul Ji that Kaka is an emotional person....there have been many instances in the past where he has been taken for a ride exactly for the same reason...hope he takes control of himself fast.....
