'the Best Doctor Who'

Paul McGann was the least favourite of the 10 TV doctors. Billie Piper was named as most popular assistant for her depiction of Rose Tyler.

The choice of Billie Piper for most popular assistant was the right choice.

However, my vote would have gone to Christoper Eccleston. Why? Because of the way he re-introduced this marvelous character, and restored the franchise.

I agree with both rochelle and Natalie but, I don't really agree with rochelle about Christopher Eccleston for being the best Dr. Who! I think the best is David Tennant, right under Tom Baker. Tom Baker was the most "Fantastic" Dr. Who ever!

I think Christopher Eccleston was the best! I know he's distanced himself from the role and seldom talks about it. But he did a phenomenal job in a handful of episodes. He wasn't as cheeky as most Doctors, but he had a presence that was undeniable. He personified the "oncoming storm." Generally, one's favorite Who corresponds to the first actor one saw in the role. That would be Tom Baker for me. Still, I have to rank him behind Eccleston. These two men had the biggest impact on my appreciation for Who..

Eccleston was fantastic to coin a phrase, but Tennant has expertly added on and gone beyond anything that first year of the revival gave us.
He is the best of the Doctors for me and my family.

I always liked Baker, he was the Dr. when I first started watching 20 or so years ago. That may be why I like him best.

First of all, they were all great and I wouldn't turn down a chance to see ANY of them. Having said that, with my back to the wall, I'd have to rank them as follows.(Please note that McGann is #10 ONLY because he had one story. More episodes probably would have moved him up a notch or two or three.)

Being a big Who fan and having watch many episodes from each of the doctors, here's my overall take and ranking for each:

1. Tom Baker - The genuine article. Personifies how the doctor is historically viewed by audience. Witty, comical, charismatic and obviously bohemian. An extremely likeable doctor. Tom brought a certain child like quality to the doctor and made him someone we could all relate to. Glad we had him as the doctor for 5 years. Gotta love him!!!

2. Chris Eccleston - The dark doctor. His was a living dichtomy. You never knew from one minute to the next what the doctor would do or be like in a given situation. This helped to add more mystery and mystic to the character. He was the
on coming storm personified. You could really feel for his character which made him very genuine but still cleaver and often times very comical. Eccleston played this character expertly and given more time in the role, would have possibly pushed Baker as #1. It's sad his time was so short. All you need to know is, he was one of the main reasons why the show made such a successful comeback.

3. David Tennant - A very good actor in many roles. As the doctor, felt he at times over played the character or was trying to hard
to be "the" doctor. Felt his character was a bit too whinny at times. This is not to take away the many wonderful moments he did have as the doctor. No doubt he will be fondly remembered.

4. Peter Davison - Had the unenviable task of following Tom Baker. The pressure was there to be a much different doctor. Must admit at first didn't know what to expect but found Davisons' doctor to be a generally likable character.

5. Paul McGann - The romantic/dramatic doctor. We hardly new him, but the feeling is he would have made a very compassionate doctor with a very "human" side about him. I would say the only real knock here would be that he didn't present the doctor as being extremely witty or otherworldly but more of a charmer.

6. Sylvester McCoy - The odd doctor. McCoys' doctor was that of humour and mystery. You got the feeling that on many levels he was a role playing doctor whos mood would change at the flip of a penny. Hard to predict. Later episodes showed him to be more empathtic towards others.
Never more so was this evident than in his last episode dealing with the master. Felt McCoy made a solid if unspectacular doctor.

7. Coin Baker - The Chaotic doctor. Had a relatively short tenure as doctor but could have been much more, given time in the role. You could tell he was starting to get into a grove in his later episodes. Was funny and crazy. His halmark sarcastic wit was never more obvious when given a situation he would respond charismatically with a humourous yet acrid commment.

8. William Hartnell - The crotchety old doctor. Though he started off very guarded and nagging, he morphed over his tenure into a very likable character who was never afraid to make a statement whether it was right or at other times very wrong.

9. Jon Pertwee - The 007 doctor. You could tell he took the role very seriouly and at times could be a witty cunning doctor but at other times very laughable.(Simply look at his attempted martial arts type manouvers.) Liked his gadgets and his authority as a unit advisor but came off as too serious at other times..

10. Patrick Troughton - The bumbling doctor. Anytime I saw his doctor he was either getting made fun of or was always bumbling around to find a solution. Could be funny at times wierd other times.
