As a recent military retiree I take offense to King’s comments. He clearly meant that troops are less educated than their civilian counterparts. The military is full of intelligent individuals who serve not because of their lack of education; but because they feel the need to serve their country. I am proud of my 21 yrs of service and wish Mr King would spend just one week living the life of a soldier. I also have several military manuals that I’d like for him to read. Afterward I’ll test his comprehension of the material.

Oh, yeah. Thats right, he meant to insult the troops. There was nothing else that he meant to it, it was just an anti-troops insult. Its funny how if an entire group can make something into a huge insult they will? Stephen King said something that I do agree could have sounded better, but he didn't try to insult anyone.
Personally, I think he was implying that there are better jobs than the military, rather than by saying that they are all idiots and can't do anything else. I know that some of the younger crowd were tricked into going, because I am 17 and I have been getting phone calls that I should join the military because it s such great opportunity to be educated. I don't think so. Once you are listed in the military, for education or other, you have to serve for them until your term is up. |
