Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people’s liberty teeth and keystone under independence … From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable . . . the very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference – they deserve a place of honor with all that is good. -George Washington

If a lot of guns provided peace and security America would
be one of the most peaceful countries in the world.

Instead, we are one of the most violent.

This is 2013, not f---ing 1799, doofus. Washington was a man, not God, and didn't have the solutions to all future problems.

He probably hoped WE'D figure it out. How disappointed he'd be in turds like you...

The REAL reason for gun control:

"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with." -Atlas Shrugged

I think we ought to stop screwing around with this issue. There are too many guns and too much gun violence....PERIOD. The Founders supported armed citizens for the purpose of forming "well-regulated militias," but we have armed forces, police, a national guard, state troopers...we don't use or need "militias" any more. So let's do this:

Let's pass a new amendment which would abolish the 2nd Amendment.

Then, let's pass sensible gun laws eliminating military-style weapons, restricting ownership of handguns, placing restrictions on certain kinds of clips, magazines, and ammunition, and restricting guns to rifles and shotguns for hunting and handguns for a limited number of people in real need of self-protection. Ban any ownership of any automatic weapon under any circumstances, obviously.

And let's provide for stiff registration, background check, and insurance requirements for gun ownership.

Couple these with gun buy-back programs aimed at removing as many guns as possible from circulation and with confiscation-destruction laws for guns seized as part of criminal investigations.

Before long, this country would be a lot more peaceful, and in time, everyone would get over their anger and outrage over their "loss of Constitutional rights."

Sounds good to me!

No surprise this is the sort of place you get your understanding of society, politics, and laws. Ayn Rand, White Russky emigre, salon dragon lady, and hack writer.

You see, George DID tell a lie. Still, if Mr. Washington could conceive of what constitutes an assault weapon today, he would never have made that statement.
Assault weapons have no place in civilian hands. There is no valid argument to the contrary. It is my ardent hope that those senators who oppose the ban, whether Democrat or Republican, are voted out of office.

We need those kind of weapons to protect ourselves from a overbearing want to be dicator like we have in the White House right now

Because we have alot of mean, crazy, selfcentered little bastards running around on our streets that need to be removed. The laws and law enforcement is not getting it done so maybe it's time to go after the ones that are commiting the crimes instead of honest law abiding people who are not commiting crimes and need to have all their firearms to keep a dicator from gaining control over the people to fleece them like sheep the way Obama is trying to do now.
