But, then again, they're two retirees who have no further stake in the system and can throw-out their opinions without suffering any cost.

Personally: if the US remains so stupid as to WANT to go to Mars then it's better to prove the equipment and techniques on the Moon (three days away) rather than send prototypes to Mars (months away) and gamble the problems/losses/deaths.
