This is kind of cool, and kind of ridiculous.
They said the original rate of releasing films on DVD was 100 per year with 1200 already out.
The new way is to burn from a catalog of 150 and release 20 per month (240 per year). It will take 5 years to get to the 1200 mark. A step back before a step forward?
Why not start releasing these as digital downloads instead of DVD? Toss 'em up on iTunes or make them available via netflix streaming. Or get ad revenue via Hulu?
It must be cheaper to burn on demand than to deal with the bandwidth issues or profit sharing.
Hrmph. To me this seems like more of a case of the studio attempting to find profits as opposed to fullfilling a dream "to find a way to get everything to everybody who wants it". I'm just not sure that this is the ultimate way to make it best for both the consumer and the studio.
