The problem with the Narnian tales is how close they are to the Christian mythos--C.S. Lewis wasn't one to hammer one's head with such teachings, but the books themselves are tools to keep that metaphor going.

The first film doesn't dwell on the subject, but if more of the films hinge on Lewis's philosophical POV, the audience is going to shrink significantly.
Recently, I re-read the Chronicles and found them lacking on a personal level. While Lewis wrote in a well respected tone, he didn't capture the individuality of a Harry Potter novel, for example, which has gone on to celebrate the joy of discovery for one young person in a way that can't be found in Lewis's Chronicles.
While Lewis's works are classics, they are not ideal to turn into films for the simple reason that they need to be filled in with details that are not present in them. The right production crew, director and screenwriter could change that, but until we see it with our own eyes, it's going to remain a nebulous goal. |

I agree with this review completely. There were things about the film that were done well. The effects and action, as always were movie-perfect. However, I felt it was too much action as compared to the book.
Also, whatever romance we are supposed to assume is developing between Susan and Caspian is hardly worthy of praise. A few glances and blank stares here and there, and finally a last-minute kiss at the end to bid him farewell? There was hardly any character development, with the exception of Lucy and a little bit of Edmund. There were some clear messages that I enjoyed and how they represented C.S. Lewis' message he conveyed in his stories. I certainly hope the third movie blows the first two out of the water. I have faith, this is usually the way things go with three or more movies. The second one always leaves you longing for more... |
