Hear Frank Oceans Cut Django Unchained Track

But as is often the case with a Tarantino movie, the song didn’t make the final cut.(Seriously, Tarantino often leaves out almost as much as he puts in to his epic features. That’s why rumors of a near-five-hour cut of Unchained surprised no one.) With all of the recent Star Trek speculation (as well as ongoing conversations about the future of the Star Wars saga, as well), it’s easy to overlook that another highly-anticipated science-fiction drama is barreling towards theaters in Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, his follow-up to the heralded District 9 that will star Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.

Ocean, however, posted the deleted track,“Wise Men,” to a Tumblr account, simply stating Django was “ill without it.” Does that mean it was better off without the song? Or does that mean he thinks the movie’s suffering because QT made the cut? Anyway, you can hear it here, and find the lyrics here. Neither of those two heavy-hitting talents are showcased in a new Elysium image posted in Empire magazine (and grabbed by ComingSoon), but we do get an up-close, intense shot of District 9 hero Sharlto Copley. His character’s name is Kruger. He appears to have something mechanical happening with his face. And he’s going to make Damon’s life very difficult:

Now that we can hear it, the atmospheric, mid-tempo ballad doesn’t fit the groove that Tarantino is going after with Django. Songs like Rick Ross’ 100 Black Coffins are a better fit. We reported on Sony’s Elysium panel back at San Diego Comic-Con, noting that Copley’s character was a scene-stealing bad-ass. His task is to hunt down Damon’s character, who is trying to gain access to an elite community that exists off our planet, in the outer atmosphere of Earth. But the character, from the clips we were able to see, has such a femented sense of humor. I think most people are going to leave Elysium raving about Copley’s performance, as well as the special effects.
