Just bought a 2007 Road King Classic. The enging is so hot at idle I frequently have to shut it down. Even at driving speeds, the heat comes up through and around the seat making for an uncomfortable ride. The 5th gear "jackhammer noise" is another issue.

I was about to purchase a Road King Classic in the next couple weeks, due to my research, I have delayed my purchase. I have found these 2 problems to be causing many headaches for 07 Harley owners. What I have found out in the forums is this:
The tranny noise problem is due to the fact that the 1st and 5th gears are straight cut gears as opposed to 2,3,4 and 6 which are helical. Straight cut gears are typically much noisier than helical. Harleys fix so far is to put heavier synthetic fluid in the tranny and to give it some time.
The heat problem is due to stringent EPA regulations which force Harley to run the bikes much leaner which causes them to run much hotter. Some people are making additional purchase such as Race Tuners and pipes to help with the problem. My attitude is that there is no way I'm gonna plunk down $20K+ for a bike then be forced to buy additional stuff to make it work right. Harley needs to step up to the plate and make these problem right or there may be severe consequences to face IMHO. You should do some research and take action. Here is one persons story.

I just bought an '07 Road Glide and put a 110 cu.in. kit in it with a K&N air filter system. I haven't ridden it yet because of the winter in Indiana. Does anyone have any experience with this configuration and the heat issues that are being discussed with the '96 cu. in.?

My husband bought '07 Road GLIDE. We had to pay additional $1,200 for race turner and stuff to be able to ride the ROAD GLIDE. My example of trying to ride the ROAD GLIDE is a wood burnning stove. When you start the bike up and ride through traffic light after light the ROAD GLIDE gets hotter. As a wood burning stove builds up heat so does the '07 Road GLIDE. We made three trips to our Harley Davidson Dealer before anyone would say buyers are bringing ROAD GLIDE back because of the heat. You can say excess heat or how ever you want to say burning hot heat. They want to act like you are not MAN ENOUGH TO RIDE a Harley Davidson bike. IF people could see the burn on my husband's leg and this happen the second day he road his new ROAD GLIDE. HE DID NOT TOUCH ANY PIPE WITH HIS LEG. When the ROAD GLIDE is paid off it comes to $35,000. Now are you man enough or woman enough to ride this ROAD GLIKE. When I called the Harley Davidson Customer Service line (414-343=4056) I was told the '07 ROAD GLIKE are like that. BRANDY Of CUSTOMER SERVICE explained about E.P.A. regulations and Harley Davidson will do nothing. We have to worry about parts put on our bike that say on the box NOT STREET LEGAL. Brandy of Harley Davidson Customer Service asked WHAT TEMPERATURE WAS THE WEATHER WHEN YOU WERE RIDING THE ROAD GLIDE. WE BOUGHT THE ROAD GLIDE IN APRIL AND THE TEMPERATURE OF THE WEATHER WAS 82 DEGREES. FIGURE THAT ONE OUT FOR YOUR SELF. MAYBE HARLEY DAVIDSON SHOULD PUT A SIGN ON THIS ROAD GLIDE 2007 SAYING DO NOT RIDE THIS BIKE IN TEMPERATURES OVER 79 DEGREES. THIS WAS OUR DREAM. MY FAMILY HAS RIDDEN HARLEY DAVIDSON BIKES SINCE THE 60'S AND I DREAMED OF ONE DAY HAVING A HARLEY DAVIDSON.

Don't buy a 2007 Harley Davidson. All are agreed the engine is too hot to be safe but Harley is recovering from the April strike and is ignoring the complaints. ALL 2007 runs too hot and most complain of the surging issue also due to the EFI settings. HD says EPA made them do it but will fix it for you at your expense with a race tuner $1,400!

Fifth gear is another common complaint saved money buying a straight cut gear that sounds like the bike is lugging.

Fill out your buyback forms under the lemon law otherwise they will not recall or fix this model year.

2007 Street glide. oil cooler, powercomander, rineharts.this took of the heat and made it run smooth, but Baker offers a kit for the trans Called F6F $895.00. But if the people that worked at Harley had these problems with there car or trucks thay would take them back, or file a law suit. So as for my self, I don't think we sould let this die I belive we should all come together and file a class action law suit.

I just purchased an 07 Wide Glide. I have ridden road kings for five years. the heat from this engine is tremendous. why do we pay Big money for HD and get NOTHING in return. My dealer told me that was the nature of the new bike..BS

I had to run on last posting. I agree with the EPA standards however, Harly should have done their homework prior to the introduction of the 96 inch hot box. 06 road king just requires K&N filter and Kerker pipes to settle the enging. I am now being told this will cost me $1200.00 to make this machine run right. I REALLY hate to say this but Harley is looking like a second rate motorcycle when you can buy an import and just ride with no extra money spent. Come on HD get your pride back and fix this engine ...

Purchased a 2007 Harley Ultra when the weather was cool and had some overheating problems that the dealer addressed. When summer arrived and the temperature went above 80 degrees the bike became unridable. The engine heat burned my wife's legs and my upper legs. Took it to two different dealers and they said that the excessive temperature was normal. People dying in car accidents is also normal but unacceptable. For sale one hot Ultra. After 3 Harleys I won't buy another.

Just bought an 07 Ultra Classic. The thing is so hot, I cant even ride it in town. Did we really just spend over 20 grand to not be able to ride. I agree with the lawsuit. I can afford another 1-2 k to make my new bike ridable.

Road Glide,

The answer to your question, NOTHING!
EPA is not going to change the standard and
HD will not accept that the air-cooled VTWIN
has gone as far as it can go. I cant believe
that they didnt know what was going to
happen, after all they claim to fully test all
models in severe environments. Why doesnt
the CEO walk into Willy G. office and tell
him that if he cant accept a fluid cooled
touring bike, retire! Or are all of the other
major motorcycle manufacturers of heavy
bikes wrong.

Dear student, Remember you are a student and at the most overrated school on the planet. Regardless, my 07 Ultra is junk. I just rode over 8,000 from Alaska to Key West and back to Atlanta and it barely stayed together. HD has issues and won't accept responsibilty. It is my last HD ride
