You don't say what year, model Ural you have. No matter. Sine 1999 and until two or three years ago, all Urals came with an alternator referred to as the 'RPOC.' That stands for 'Russian Piece of Crap.'

The RPOC has since been replaced with a Denso alternator. The Denso is a direct replacement for the RPOC and is available from Ural dealers.

You will note that the alternator runs off the timing gears. If the alternator siezes, as the RPOC is prone to do, it takes out the timing gears and thus most of the engine.

In short, if your RPOC is giving you grief, replace it before it grenades and trashes your entire engine.

Some RPOC alternators seem to be more reliable than others. Mine, for example, came with my '99 model and still works fine. Others self-destruct in much less time.

I have a ural tourist 2000 . To adjust the timing gear to the alternator gear, take off the back cove of the alternator. find a small drill chuck and clamp on to the center shaft. Now turn the chuck back and forth, this way you can feel the backlash of the gears, adjust to minimin backlash. Turn engine over with kicker and check the backlash. Tighten alternator bolts down. The alternator bearing does not have a press fit . When the engine heats up the bearing and shaft moves back and forth. This make the alternator and timing gear makes noise! I use shim stock to tighten the bearing for the press fit. Hope this will help you.
