Pretty much what many of us have been saying for a long time. Buy Chinese scooters only from an "authorized" dealer who has been in business for a few years. Even if it means havin to drive an hour to get there. Check their credentials, ask questions about parts and labor. Check with the local BBB to see if any complaints have been filed. Buy off the interent, you get what you deserve. I did and and I did!

I bought my Vitacci Veneta 150cc scooter (Chinese Vespa look-alike) from a scooter dealer in the Houston/Clear Lake, TX area last September 2008 and I still use it almost everyday (when not raining) commuting to work. Have not had a problem with it until now. It's fun to ride, cheap on gas, and a head-turner for a female rider like me! My dealership also has a repair shop, and most of the scooters they repair are bought on the internet.

Chinese batterys are crap filled with water and only made to crank at the dealership!!! Go to a lawn and garden shop and get a lawnmower battery. I have a tank 50cc (broken) and replaced the battery and made a huge diff.

Interested in buying a Chinese scooter? Beware! I have only had mine for a little over a year, which I bought from a dealership and am mechanically inclined, and have already had to rebuild the engine twice. I may have to do so a third time. Be sure to buy from a dealership and get warranty with it. Or simply don't buy one.

Bought my JM Star Nemo 150 in June '09. I bought from a dealer in San Mateo CA and couldn't be happier with the scooter, the dealer,(City Powersports) or their service. It is a small, family run company that has taken good care of me and the scooter. They made a special trip of about 30 miles to my house to help me out the first day I brought it home and couldn't figure out how to unlock the front wheel lock due to unfamiliarity with the system. I paid a little more at the dealer than the on-line prices, and It has been well worth it. Cal DMV had no trouble registering my bike as a motorcycle.
I regret reading some of the petty, ill thought-out responses made by a few of the bloggers. And I'd like to give a tip of hat to the people who made the sympathetic, helpful responses. That is what these sites are all about.
Hope to see some of you on HWY 1 along the California coast. Keep the rubber side down!

Those responses were not ill thought-out. They were the results of buying a Chinese scooter from an internet wholesaler. You bought from a local dealer. That is the only way to buy a scooter, any scooter regardless of brand name. People buy Chinese scooters off the internet because they think they are getting a great deal. They are not, they are getting a fist full of trouble. If you have really read any of the posts on this forum you would see a very common thread. BUY FROM AN AUTHORIZED DEALER!

In Pa. any scooter with a L vin is registered as China manufactured. Pa requires that the manufacturer be registered with NHTSA, before you can register it in Pa. So before you buy make sure you ask the manufacturer, not the name on the body, but on the Vin plate.

My 2006, 150 cc's JM Star started giving me problems when about a month ago occasionally wouldn't start even though turning over and getting a spark...I would wait about 15 minutes and then it would start and run perfectly. This past week, it also started breaking up, the last time very badly and backfiring...I still have a good spark when turning over...Is it possible it's the cdi?? It won't start at all now and when turning over it seems like it's out of time...Is that possilbe or could it be the carberator??

JM Star scooters are crap. I got one and it has been nothing but trouble. Buy a Honda or Yamaha from a dealer.

Its the intake manifold. I had the same problem. The maifold dry rots and you have to replace it with a teflon one.

Hey Tiny timm I researched my scooter inside and out and everything looked good up front, but it still is a piece of crap. So you can research the hell out of something and still not know what your getting when everything your reading is bullshit and the distributer doesn't back up what they sell or tells you there's no problems with regestering these things, we'll send you all the necessary paperwork. Like you've never been screwed out of anything in your life.....shut it.

I bought a JM-star MC-SL19 4 stroke scooter from Scooter Depot via Sunny Sports July 21, 2008 for $1399, with free delivery to my door. License and registration in Florida went just fine. Early on there was a gas leak but that went away after the break in. 700 miles so far with only one complaint, the built in alarm system shut down and the scoot wouldnÂ’t start. My friends at Black Widow Motorcycles found the loose wire and corrected it the same day. The scoot runs like a charm and gets 70 mpg. Happy!
