Hi,

My condolences to the wife and family of Ryan Shay.

On the 23rd December 2006, my son Ben, a soccer player and surfer died of a heart attack at 31.

I would like to ask if Ryan Shay was in the habit of consuming diet soda prior to his death?

My son was consuming a can of cola when he died. I have not been able to ascertain if it was diet cola.

Google aspartame, the sweetener in diet soda, and you will never drink diet soda again. Here is a link to start with. http://www.listener.co.nz/issue/3512/features...

This information will not bring Ben or Ryan back but it may prevent further deaths.

regards

Pat.

People often confuse fitness for health. This is another case of a very fit person with a health problem. This is the Jim Fixx syndrome.

It Figures we would get this from someonethat doesn't understand american running. Olympic hopefuls are the most drug tested athletes going. No doubt, the large muscle (heart) developed by this endurance athlete, which made him so great, ended up being his achilles heel.

It is pretty obnoxious for a Slovakian to insinuate that this american boy took durgs. I was at the trials. It was great to hear the chants of "USA, USA" for the future olympians as they did their victory laps. The New York crowd, the running community, the american flag were all proudly on display. The chants I've locked in my memory, and they will overshodow the post from Slovakia.

This is a sad story and a young person like this should earn credit for serving his country. I prey to his parents, wife and to his close friends.

this is tragic. sometimes this happens when you push the limits. I guess it was just his time to go. at least he went doing what he loved most.

Athletes have the most demanding stress placed on their bodies that it should be mandatory that each athlete take a physical each year that includes testing of the circulatory system. The most healthy individuals also come up with these problems that do affect their hearts but are more prone to dismiss the possibilities because they look physically healthy...

I'm sorry for your loss. My father died of a heart attack at 40 and that was bad enough. I can't imagine the shock you must have gone through.

I remember during the Viet Nam war, they were doing routine autopsies on soldiers killed in battle and finding plaque buildup in the arteries of kids in their early 20's.

I would imagine it's much worse even today.
