have been riding the same i-convert for almost 25 yrs. well over 100'000 km. no major parts replaced, except cyl heads and valves adapted for unleaded fuel. the secret of this particular transmission is the fichtel&sachs torque converter located within the clutch housing of engine. a good bike does not show any redish mist anywhere.
atf tank under the left cover has to be clean, as well. hydraulic hoses and piping clean.
let me tell you: there's no smoother ride. good luck!

I have 76 lapd version with tons of miles. I took her to West virginia from British Columbia, 6200 miles in two weeks with only a new rear tire (expected) 1/2 way there and a small oil drip drip drip. I leave for Colorado in 3 weeks. Bike runs and runs and runs.

I have 2 76 converts and one I have nad no problems out of and the other I have changed the drive shaft and rear main seal. The battery does not charge when just riding in town. They are a very very well ballanced bike and fun to ride. I love the converts and will never part with them. Any Q's iowtf6969@gmail.com

Guzzifrank, I was in Chilliwack a few years ago. I just love B.C. I'm thinking of buying a Convert (you could say I'm a Convert!) but just how do you check the tappets and timing without use of the gearbox to position the crankshaft? Starter motor? Or is there a dodge?

Oh, well, I guess I'm gonna find out soon. I bought it! A 1976 Mk 1 with all the whistles and bells, only 14500 miles on the clock (hope that's genuine!) imported from South Africa, it cost me an arm, a leg, and very nearly a marriage too, but 37 year-old habits die hard!!!!
Thing is, where do I put the beast? The garage is full of Royal Enfields!!!!

I've had a '76 convert for about 190k miles now, bought in '79. The u-joint has finally given up. The motor died an unnatural death at about 175k. I replaced it with the 1100 fuel injected square-head motor, lemans pipes and lightened the flywheel by about 5#. It's finally what he Convert should have been when it was built. Only weak points I can see are the charging system (upgrades available), the tranny fluid pump drive piece (6mm allen wrench stock), and the stamped rather than cast flywheel. Otherwise it's been bulletproof for me. The Convert is not known for fuel economy. Good luck!
