we need to build bicycle lanes. There are probably many people who would ride a bicycle to work if there were safe lanes to ride in without danger from cars.

Someday someone will release a study on motorcycle accidents by motorcycle category. This article touches the problem of agressive drivers on hot motorocycles, but I get if this study were done you would find that the vast majority were indeed this kind of problem. Cautious drivers on cycles like BMWs (gentlemen cycles) have far fewer accidents!

BTW, whoever decided that it was legal for cycles to drive between cars in their legal lanes should be shot. Even police motorcycles do this ridiculous stunt at 60-70MPH!

By shooting these people, that would save lives how???

I think you missed the point. He's saying the guy/persons who decided it was legal to do so should have been shot. Not to shoot the people doing it now. And I would have to agree. I was on the way home on the 101 one night and a guy on a "crotch" rocket came zooming up between myself and the person on my left. His elbow hit my side view mirror and I saw him waver and slow before he waved that he was fine before he took off at 70 mph again. Just think what would have happened if he had lost his balance. If it was illegal to do that maneuver, I think more accidents could be avoided. These young guys like to 'cut' between cars and it's risky. They come up so fast you don't even see them until they're there. I'm all for motorcycles, but in the safest manner possible.

90% of motorcycle accidents happen in the first 6 months of ownership.

Knowing this little fact, all else is explained.

Motorcycles are no more dangerous per mile than small cars..

However, like submarines, when you get into trouble, you are much more likely to be hurt.

When riding a motor cycle, the question isn't IF you're going to get into an accident. The question is WHEN you will get into an accident. I've never known a motor cycle rider who's not been into an accident. And of those you have gotten into an accident, the majority of the accident turned were actually nearly life ending accident. Some have continue to ride, accepting that they may actually die because of it, while the majority either stopped riding after the serious accident or they stopped riding because they've died!

Dear Sue Doyle

First off do you ride a motorcycle ? And secondly all your numbers are great but why did you forget to put the accidents caused by drivers that cause the motorcyclist to go down ? Your article makes it seem all of us motorcycle riders have no proper licenses or training. As a motorcycle rider myself it is amazing how many times I have people TURN LEFT IN FRONT OF ME change into my lane and have no idea I am near them or around them. Before the cell phone law which I see has not changed peoples use of the cell phone. I count numerous drivers talking on the phone while cutting me off or turning into my lane. As for the accidents as a Fireman I am unfortunate to go on these types of accidents. What makes me angry is the witnesses or the motorcyclist himself/herself says the car or truck was at fault. And they are right this is not 100 % true all the time we do go on people that take chances but all in all the majority ride safe. For everyone that drives a car or truck how about SHARE THE ROAD ? For example on the freeway when I have my turn signal on to pass why do you speed up or block me in ? It seems to me people are to busy not paying attention IE talking to people, eating, shaving, TEXTING, and not paying attention to us the motorcycle riders and the general public. Motorcycling should be enjoyable but with most drivers on the road it is a dangerous game of life and death it seem. Mrs Doyle how would you like to go on a motorcycle ride with me and see what really happens out there so you can write a more accurate article for the front page ?

DO any of you people who post on here ride or EVER RIDDEN a motorcycle how about do it first then give your comments. As for splitting lanes I would like to thank all of you that see me in your rear view mirror and then proceed to squeeze me into the car next to me. It is always interesting to see all the mirrors damaged from motorcycle's splitting lanes like myself. And no it is not at 60 to 70 mph it is when traffic is 20 - 30 mph or stopped.
