Motorcycles involved in fatal crashes at a rate of 35.0 per 100 million miles of travel,
compared with a rate of 1.7 per 100 million miles of travel for passenger cars.
So you are 20 times more likely to die riding a bike than driving a car.
Alcohol plays a big role. About half of the guys who die are drunk. If you do not drink and ride,
you are only 10 times more likely to die riding that driving.
Sixty percent of fatalities occurred at night. If you ride only during the day, your chances of
dying are reduced by more than half again. You are now only 4 or 5 times more likely to die
on your bike than in your car.
Speed is a big factor. In 2006, 37% of all dead riders were speeding. They do not say whatís
speeding, but I think itís a lot. Last Saturday Iíve seen some guys who were probably doing
120 mph on highway 25.
One quarter (25%) of the dead guys did not have a license.
Half of all the deaths were guys riding a so-called supersport bike. This is most likely related to speeding.
More than half (51%) of the fatal crashes were at intersections.
If you do not speed, have a license and pay attention at the intersections, your number will
divide by two again. You will be 2 to 3 times more likely to die in a bike accident than in a car accident.
If you drive the average 15,000 miles/year in your car, and ride less than 5,000 miles/year on your bike,
you are more likely to die in your car.

A helmet is on of the most important safety factor when anyone decides to get motorcycle. The motorcycle riders is more susceptible to crash situations and crash statistics paints a severe picture. Majority of the people do not realize the importance of wearing a good motorcy cle helmet regardless of repeated warnings and horrific stories of crash victims.
In motorcycle accidents, head injuries are the most common cause of deaths. A rider without helmet is most prone to injury or death in case of any accident. The death or injury could have been avoided by using helmet as it absorbs much of the force of impact. Now many countries have approved laws requiring motorcycle riders to wear helmets
How a Motorcycle Helmet Works
Most of the helmets are made of plastic material and are designed with exclusive crumple zones which can absorb most of the shock on impact. Some helmets are made up of a combination of carbon fiber and Kevlar and hence are expensive.
The interior of the helmet is padded so that it can fit more safely and offer more protection. Helmets are designed with the intention that they crack and break from particular areas because of the shock they absorb in case of a collision.
Types of Helmets
The selection of helmet depends on various factors including the type of motorcycle, weather conditions, whether it will be used for sport and for what type of sport.
Following are the types of helmets specially made for motorcycle clothing riders are:
Full Face Helmet: It provides the best cover for the head and face. The face shield prevents injury to the face and head in case of crash and protects the rider from rubble and insects that could disrupt the rider's attention.
The Modular Helmet: it is also referred to as the flip up because the front portion can be pivoted upwards. When modular helmet is closed, it resembles the full face design.
The Motocross: Especially made helmet for riders of dirt bikes. It provides extra safety to chin area and visor. For full protection goggles are needed because motocross has an open face design.
The Open Face: This helmet covers the head but gives no protection to chin area.
Half Helmet: It provides less protection in case of a crash so it is recommended for short distances.
Following guidelines should be remembered for motorcycle safety.
1. Discard the helmet which once protected you in a crash even if it appears undamaged.
2. Riders should use different helmets for day and nighttime riding. For instance, darkened shield of full face helmet can blur the vision at night and increases the chances of an accident.
